One of my bulbs is burned out and I need a replacement. I wouldn't mind a LED alternative. On the bulb, all it says is 12v 6w but nothing else. I've checked the manual and the forum but can't find anything.

Does anyone have a part number for a replacement bulb or LED upgrade?

Did you take it to an auto parts store and try to match it up?

Documented an LED replacement for the license plate lights in my 20th Anniversary build thread. Here: https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?18591-EdwardBs-Mk4-8674-20th-Anniversary-Build&p=236455&viewfull=1#post236455. Borrowed the idea from another forum member as indicated. This is a quote from that post, which also has some other unrelated items. Ignore the part about the Kleiner mod if you have a newer Mk4 with enough room for the license plate without modification.

Next up was the rear license plate mount and light. Here there are two things. One is the world famous Kleiner mod to fit the license plate between the mount and the trunk handle. The other is changing it over to LED lighting along with everything else. I was very fortunate that forum member carlewms posted a very nice solution to do both using (3) MAL-S-WW2 Warm White with Silver Housing LED license plate bolt lights from SuperBrightLED.com. Ordered the lights and wrapped it up this morning. Perfect! I only made one slight modification. I added some spacers under the lights so they stand up a little higher and get both elements projecting onto the plate a little better. Thanks Carl!

This is the modified fixture with the old removed parts on the left. Minor fabrication to make a new mounting bracket and drill a couple holes. Pretty easy. It’s all up high enough to clear the license plate.

I was hoping for find a more plug and play type of light bulb. After some research after measuring the standard F5 iridescent bulb, I found these that matched:

Plugs right in to the existing socket, cheap, LED. Score! Hand some out to your friends too.

In case the link changes in the future, it is a BA9S bulb.
