I have ordered a Type 65 Complete Kit and will start detailing some work and parts obtained before the kit arrives. This will be significantly different than my previous MK4 Cobra base kit build.

Spec’d out kit with IRS rear end, TKX transmission, hydraulic clutch and Gen 3 Coyote running gear. I upgraded to the Wilwood brakes in red, Coyote KRC power steering kit, heat/defrost/air conditioning, wipers, side windows and aero vents.

Very excited about this build and applying lessons learned and different options based upon driving and building my MK4. Since building my MK4, I’ve gotten proficient at TIG welding, have obtained a CNC plasma table as well as a 3D printer and hope to utilize these resources during the Daytona build.

I don’t have your knowledge and skill set - but, I’ve really enjoyed your unconventional build and that has motivated me to pull the trigger. BTW, I retired from Washington State.

I deleted gauges on my order knowing I would do custom Speedhut ones as I did with my MK4. This morning I took advantage of Speedhut's Black Friday 20% off. GPS speedometer, RPM shift lights and the FFR compliment - all with warning lights.

Like others, thought it would be pretty cool to have a modern Peter Brock design product on the Daytona. So I ordered his BRE aerodynamic side mirrors.

Congrats Chris! I missed this news until just now. I am currently working on a Gen3 with a set of Brock mirrors…the Coupe has huge blind spots and they help a lot.

Look forward to following your build!

Congrats Chris!

Great planning on your part. By planning ahead, and ordering as many parts as possible that you know you will need for the build, you can lessen the impact of pandemic-caused delays on your build.

What's the planned usage for your Coupe? Street cruiser? Show winner? Drag racing? Autocross? Little bit of everything?

Thanks! Building this more for grand touring and comfort (and a little bit of everything else). I've helped with a number of builds and I really enjoy assembling, fabricating and stying. I love my MK4, but more legroom and protection from the elements would be nice. After 5 upper back surgeries, my straight axle Cobra beats me up. The Daytona will have IRS, which should be a game changer.

Very happy with mine. Painted to match the body. Used Peter's instructions to locate them as best I could. Proportions on the FF Coupe are clearly a bit different than his Superformance. Having them on both sides and in the proper position really helps see out the back. Which is challenging for the Coupe as I'm sure you know or have heard. One suggestion. I didn't use his backing plate. I made a larger one to spread out the load better. Plus put nutserts on it since if you use door cards you won't be able to access the inside. I have to take mine off/on to fit in my trailer. So that was especially important. Sorry for the grainy picture. It's cropped from a larger pic.

Planning ahead and acquiring more parts - I know I'm going with. With my MK4, I used the modified NRG low profile quick release steering wheel hub assembly. My understanding is it truly helps with ingress/egress with the Type 65. Did it with my Cobra primarily because the faux carbon fiber (CF) release would look trick against my custom CF dash and as fun project. Still have the 3D jigs I made to modify the NRG unit.

My current Cobra sometimes runs lean and has aeration problems with 5/16 feed & 1/4 return fuel lines and an external fuel pump (which is loud). Currently running a fuel map data logger for additional tuning with my Pro-M Racing ECM. Since I'm going with a Generation 3 Coyote and as discussed on the Forum, I'm going with the Pro-M Racing fuel tank hangar with 3/8 feed and return lines. Will use the Walbro 255 LPH in tank fuel pump.

Hi Paul. Can you remind us of the type of rear view mirror you are using in the cabin? Is this mounted to the roll bar such as products available from Longacre?

I too have the BRE side mirrors - a long way from mounting :-)

Hi Paul. Can you remind us of the type of rear view mirror you are using in the cabin? Is this mounted to the roll bar such as products available from Longacre?

I too have the BRE side mirrors - a long way from mounting :-)

I ended up with a Brandmotion 9002-9701 Infinity Manual Dimming Mirror mounted on the windshield with their Brandmotion D-tab Mounting Kit 9002-6112 and Loctite 37438 rear view mirror adhesive. I'm happy with it and provides about as much rear view coverage as possible through the narrow hatch window. Bought the mirror in 2019 on Amazon. Just Googled it and looks like it's discontinued. Lots of similar ones out there. I picked that one at the time because it looked decent and had good reviews. I originally tried a Longacre Racing Products 22534 14 inch roll bar mounted mirror. I didn't care for it. Felt it was too close to my face while sitting in the car. But that's very subjective and was also early in the build before I was really used to much about the car. Others have used that or similar roll bar mounted mirrors. So you might find that style is fine.

Merry Christams everyone. I am going to chime in on the rear visibility on the coupe. I was tempted by the larger side mirrors and actually purchased some for a motorcycle which look similar to the Brock ones but a lot cheaper. My issue is I have a two car garage with two cars and it's used as a main access path into the house so I knew these mirrors which make the car really wide would not survive with the traffic in the garage. So I purchased a rear view mirror, autovox t9 I believe with a built in back up camera. The rear view mirror looks like a normal mirror so it doesn't detract from the old school look and I mounted the camera under the rear lip so it's hard to see. Works great with a 170 degree field of view, I can change lanes as I can see cars just off the back edge on either side. So with the bullet side mirror and the camera it's great. The one down side is that the field of view is so wide I cannot make out fine details of cars a long ways back, which is no issue unless you are making sure no police officers are behind you before you jump on the go fast pedal.

Hey Chris,
There's another FFR Gen 3 Coupe being built (2+ years now) just a few miles from you in Williamson off Rt 5.
You might want to check it out. PM me and I'll give you the contact information.

I'm also building a FFR Gen 3 Coupe but, I'm in Scottsdale. I'd show you my build and discuss whatever you want about it and yours if you care to drive down to the valley.

Looked at this several times at Costco and finally pulled the trigger today and purchased it. By all accounts, visibility out of the rear of the Daytona is tough...

The provided license plate frame has the camera built in and you can either mount the monitor as a rear view mirror on the windshield or on or in the dash.

There are quite a number of video rear view mirrors out now in the aftermarket, just like they have in the C8 Corvette.
Might look into one of those to replace the conventional rear view mirror.

This can be mounted as a conventional rear view mirror with the included hardware or mounted simply as a dash monitor. You also can link the system and have an additional front camera.

That is not a bad idea. Have considered this. Also I'm 50/50 on the Brock mirrors vs the Traditional Chrome round ones. More worried about the blind spot than anything else. They really blend in well on Paul's build.

They really are a quality mirror and I feel they look good. Jeff Kleiner stated that they really make a difference concerning the big blind spot and I feel that the Brock mirrors in conjunction with a camera/rear view mirror-monitor will be the answer for me,

Most of the dedicated video rear view mirrors have a very wide field of view, really reduces the blind spots.
But, they work best when the camera is mounted high, and somewhat forward, not like you would a normal back up camera.
Would be best if it could be mounted up at the top of the hatch glass, similar to the C8 Corvette. There are cameras that are in a pod that surface mounts to make that possible.

I am really liking the idea of a rearview mirror / camera setup @rsnake mentioned above. Going to research those more. Trick like he mentioned will be placing the camera in a location where it isn't too visible. My main concern I guess is someone coming quickly up on you into the blind spot....I imagine especially with these cars guys speeding up from behind to "check it out" (guilty of that myself  )...and being harnessed in difficult to manually check the blind spot I imagine...

Wonder if it can just be mounted inside to the hatch glass up top....distortion for sure, but I don't need to be able to read what brand of chips they're eating

Well the beauty of this is that I bought it from Costco, so if I don't like, I can return. Unfortunately, the camera is mounted in the license plate - lower which is not the ideal location as others have mentioned. The monitor can be mounted as a rear view mirror and you can adjust the field of view, so I'll give it a try.

Spending money like a Rockstar, ordered the PBS-1 push button start from Digital Guard Dawg.

161984161985

Requested the black billet aluminum start button (over the brushed stainless steel) with the GREEN halo activation/arming light which will go nicely with my green Speedhut gauges. Also chose the standard key fob over the OEM style. This allows for you to slide the fob open and turn off the proximity arming feature for example, if you are at a car show.

Chase Bays parts are very nice quality, I have their hydro in my Coupe-R. Their shop is in Birmingham Alabama, about an hour south of me.

You don't need much volume for washer fluid. Not like a daily driver mule with 2 gallons. I'm curious to see how you tackle mounting the spray nozzles to the body, or integrating them to the wiper arms.

Taking advantage of healing down time and ordered the remaining components for my drive train. Forte received a pallet of Coyote Moroso oil pans today, so I canceled my pending Summit Racing order and purchased from him. Additionally, ordered the remained needed components: starter, Quick Time Bell housing, fly wheel, clutch, clutch fork and all needed hardware & gaskets. Did not know, but Quick Time makes two different bell housings for the Coyote, street & race (SFI rated). Forte has a large industrial band saw that makes quick work at clearancing the bell housing to clear the frame. As most have commented, the Gen 3 ain't pretty to look at and the engine cover requires modification to work with this application. Forte modifys a Gen 2 (I believe) engine cover to work with the Gen 3. The heads & coil packs are exposed, but it's an improvement, so I ordered that as well:

After several inquiries from our community, I felt compelled to explain why this build is starting slow. After several right arm surgeries and a bad infection at one of the surgery sites, I'm still struggling with the functioning of my right hand. I'm also battling vertigo as well from previous cervical fractures & surgeries. So I'm taking advantage of this down time to have a steel shop put up. You don't realize how dependent you are for day to day activities in using your dominant hand. Things are compounded by my balance getting turned upside down.

Just wanted to let my extended family within our great community know, that I'm slowly moving onward & upward.

Front coilovers and lower control arms installed after the springs were re-coated in red powdercoat to match the red Wilwood calipers. I believe other members have noted this, but the stainless steel bushings that center the upper shock mounts are not clearenced enough for the attaching bolts to pass through. Do not try to "deadblow" the bolt to push through these sleeves (how do I know?). It will deform the mounting tabs very easily...used a pricy drill bit capable of reaming through the stainless steel mounting spacers to the bolt's specific diameter.

Between health challenges and putting up a new shop, this is going to be a much slower build than originally planned.

I wanted to reach back out to the community I have been involved with and have loved over the past 11+ years. Still have been off radar and uninvolved for months...

Multiple surgeries, infections, setbacks, weddings, construction projects...it has been a tough fight.

We get to a stage in life to obtain our personal dreams, yet our chosen paths in life and the physical trauma associated negates the joy. Do your best to protect your body!

My complete respect to our members that are building while battling serious health challenges. There is a fine line where the joy of building offsets physical pain...

Hope to building soon. Have written a lot of checks that I can't currently cash (CNC Plasma table)...

Been off the grid (aka Forum) dealing with cancer. Been missing the community. About three weeks out from my last surgery and look forward to ‘unpausing’ this build. Between cancer and managing my lil ranch, I’ll probably set a record for the slowest Type 65 build…I’m no longer going to do a detailed build log, just major updates.

Totally understandable. Best of Luck on your surgeries and the car. Looking forward to hearing more.

My two sons just picked up the Daytona and will be taking over the build - to be completed in WA State. It will be theirs to co-own.

They will present on the Forum probably with a different thread.

Hi Chris. It was great chatting with you the other day. I'm sorry to hear about your cancer situation, and sincerely hope it turns around for the better. I was looking forward to following your build here, but perhaps your sons will document their progress in their own thread. Good to know your project will stay in the family.

Best wishes for a full health recovery.
