Just trying to cover bases here. Has anyone used catalytic converters in the side pipes of either roadster or coupe builds?

Yes, Many many times.

Yes, but not in the side pipes themselves. Factory Five in the past, maybe still, had J-pipes with CATs in them as an option for the Ford Modular engines. I used them with a 4.6L DOHC engine. Together with GAS-N side pipes they toned the sound level down a bit but good sound when you got on it.
CATs tend to be rather large, even the performance CATS look to be too large to integrate into the side pipes.
What the "need" for their use? Do you have emission requirements that you must meet?

I installed headers with built-in cats on my gen2 coyote. They were made by GP Headers.

I live in NY and I have head that they are required. I have not had a chance to verify that yet. Just trying to cover all bases before placing an order for something that may be an issue. I am looking at a FI 427/TKX 5 speed combination. Not a modular setup.

Before going too far down the catalytic converter rabbit hole, you may just want to post a question to the forum asking about NY titling regulations. I'm sure there are plenty of folks that can tell you exactly what's required. I think California has the strictest titling requirements in the US and CA doesn't require catalytic converters, FWIW.

^^ Good advice.
I have cat J-pipes on my roadster (4.6L SOHC mod motor). Because my roadster is titled and registered as a 1965, I don't have to pass emissions, so I don't need cats from that standpoint.

I live in California and run BBK shorty headers into "J" pipes. The J pipes have integrated cats from FFR. The J pipe then attaches to the side pipe. I did it for sound and to "run cleaner", ie no fuel fumes.

There is actually a post ongoing about titling in NY State that doesn't really answer a lot of these questions. I have contacted NY DMV and will be going to the local DMV office to get information. I'm just trying to get information on what options I may have when I get the DMV info. I have also read in the post that bumpers are required. That may be a bigger issue if true. There was also a report that our new Governor is trying to pass a law that would make aftermarket exhaust systems, exhaust cut outs, loud mufflers, etc unlawful! Might even be a decibel level.

Are you running a modular setup?

Sorry, I should have clarified. I'm running a Windsor 302 block, not a modular one...

That may be the solution for that if I find out its required. Thanks.

Yes, Many many times.
MY answer hasn't changed, I ran cats on my personal car for years, it was a Windsor 5.0. Also have a Windsor 306 here that has cats on it for ST Jude that is headed to Texas.

I went to DMV today to pickup form MV-272.1. It notes that you have to request the vehicle application package. Call 518-474-5282 (option 4). I talked to Matt. He was very knowledgeable about the FF cars. He is going to send me the package of forms and instructions. He did explain to me that the engine emissions package would be based on what was required in 1965 (PVC only) but that the safety features of the car would be based on the date of completion. Two issues with the coupe are side marker lights and bumpers. For the side markers he did say that a simple bracket and small light in the wheel well would pass. As for bumpers he said in the past folks would mount something simple in the fog light location attached to the hinge so when the nose tilts so does the bumper. I asked him how it was tested and what it need to withstand and he told me that they don't do any sort of test. Just look to see that it is there. He also said the same quick mounts used on the roadster would pass on the coupe. At that point he wanted to make very clear to me that there were less than a hand full of inspectors there and they were all car guys/mechanics and they were there to help folks like us to get thru the process and not to be road blocks!

Many FFR cars are registered in NY. The new noise law doesn’t apply as these are not modified factory exhausts. Home builds have different rules. What engine you use and what part of the state you live in determines whether you need that stuff. I have a 302 so do not. But at the end of the day the guys I’ve spoken to at the DMV seem like they want to help. I was out to ease when I called.
There are a couple great threads on NY registration and the common theme seems to be lots of anxiety before hand followed by a sense that it wasn’t that bad. Nobody I have ever heard of has nothing been able to register their car.
Having said all that my plan B if I should need them is to remove my Jpipes and have someone weld a set in.

I just registered my car in upstate NY Coyote Gen3 with not CATS.
I spoke to Matt at the NY DMV back in September 2021 and he told me the way to get around using cats was to go with a carbureted 302. Did you need to do anything special with the Coyote for the registration? Also, did you end up with bumpers mounted to the chassis where the fog lights would normally be. I spoke with Matt about doing that and he liked the design sketch I sent him. I live in upstate NY and currently taking a good long look at building a gen 3 coup. Any help you can provide on your experience with the build and the registration would be greatly appreciated.

I also talked with Matt a while back. He told me that the quick jacks used on the roadster would also pass on the coupe. Just need to figure out how to mount them (temp! :p)

I had the same thought about using the quick jacks from the Roadster. Need a clean way to mount them to the hood hinges so that it doesn't look hideous. I'm also trying to think through how to integrate a license plate mounting bracket to one of the front bumpers. Matt said a front plate is mandatory.

My feeling is it will only look hideous for one day. I do not plan on keeping them after the inspection if I can get away with it.

try mounting a bumper in the fog light holes using the hinge bolts for the front and body mount bolts rear? Just a thought. I did't require them where I live but I added 1/2 inch LED lights as side markers, red rear and orange front.

I vaguely remember one builder installing his license plate on a coupe using mount that pivoted downward. the air would push the plate out of the way while the coupe was in motion and then pop up when stationary. this was done using a simple spring so it was a quick and easy solution.
I do not remember who it was and that was many years ago so you may have to do some digging on this forum (or the other one. I forget which)
