Wanted to share...

I successfully painted my MK4 as a first timer (not counting spraying tractor & implement enamel through the Harbor Freight purple gun). I had a small drip/run under each tail light and a small sag & run on the right side of the body near the vent cutout.

I had a large test hood that I did some test spraying on. On one area of my test panel, I got a big ugly sag with multiple runs. I decided to test my hand at removing that defect and cut/polish that section of my test hood.

I purchased the Festool Paint Nib & Run Remover (Festool part #497525 / 3m part#29925). It was expensive for a glorified razor blade but I have to say, this thing is awesome. It is nearly idiot proof and it does a fantastic job shaving down nibs and runs. I highly recommend it if your reluctant or worried about using a razor blade like I was. It is WAY better than the nib files and Unigrit Blocks.

Then, I tried the glazing putty method on the sag. I used Dolphin glaze over the sag (about a 12" long area) and started sanding down the glaze putty with 220 grit dry. Once I was sanding into the sag a little, but still having complete coverage of glaze putty surrounding the sag, I went to 320 dry, then 600 wet. I sanded all the putty off with 600 wet. Then the entire area of the panel up to 2000. CSI CeramX with a rotary and their blue wool pad and then their red foam pad.

Amazing how well the area turned out. Im astonished how such a BIG ugly run/sag is gone! I have been nervous of all these steps doing the body & paint, but the cut and polish seemed as nerve racking or more than spraying clear coat. Granted, Im not doing the car yet, but my confidence with cut/polish and the rotary has deffinitely gone up a notch or two.

Hope my post helps someone else in the future.

I am more then happy for you.....however, consider yourself lucky. More times then not there is not a "happy ending" (as much as.....never mind). I only say this.....from 50 years of experience .... Cheers...da Bat

Haha. Yes, definitely lucky. I’ve learned with this painting…. You're not only paying a pro for the work, you’re paying for their years of experience

Definitely an experience driven art form requiring intensive attention to detail.

I have used a similar process to remove sags & runs with usually good success. I will note that a couple of times that even after waiting a considerable amount of time (10 days?) when I got close to the bottom of the run the clear cat was still soft. This created an even bigger issue to solve and ended up having to re-clear the whole panel.
