Good afternoon all,
I have been doing a bit more research on the process of registering a Coupe or Cobra within Illinois. I came across this custom vehicles information: https://www.ilsos.gov/departments/vehicles/title_and_registration/apply_custom_rod.html. Another concern I have is bumpers maybe? I know there are many registered for the road across the country but wonder if there were any in the Illinois area? Coupe owners please share the hoops you may have had to jump through for registering.

Thank you all in advance for the information you may be able to provide.

Respectfully

Matthew - AKA PointmanUSMC

Would any Illinois Coupe owners out there be able to provide any feedback?

Thanks

Maybe some of the roadster guys can chime in. You could PM nuhale, Al_C, ILPBFoot, or steno.

I haven't gone through the process yet. But, I think it depends on the particular state employee.

I know multiple roadsters have been registered without satisfying the exact words in the bumper requirement. The requirement says, "front and rear bumpers must... extend no less than the width of the respective wheel tracks' outermost distance." But, quickjacks or over riders on a roadster certainly do not extend the width of the wheel track.

On the other hand, I've heard that some unwritten rules are enforced. For example, I don't see wipers mentioned in the requirements. But, I've heard that the state checks for wipers.

I'm not in Illinois and I haven't gone through the registration process, but I found this reply in a thread titled Vintage/Classic Plates.

That is interesting thank you for sharing. One owner in another state mentioned he was able to register his vehicle but no mention to the "bumpers" was questioned. Would be interesting risk for a project if it passed inspection. The cobra had bumpers or overriders whereas the Coupe did not. I appreciate you sharing that post.

My specific situation was unique as I acquired my roadster partially built with certificate of origin in original owners name. I had to go thru a bonded title process. Overall the standard process is not terrible. There is a state employee (ill have to go dig in my notes) that you call and he is well versed in factory five kits. He will send you the package to fill out. You need to submit all paperwork with some photos. After a few weeks you will get a call to have state police come inspect and install a vin tag. This is where it gets interesting as I've talked with a dozen folks that all report a different experience. All depends on the officer. For me the guy showed up, said "sweet Porsche" (I dare not correct him) and "where do you want the vin". He installed it and left end of story. Did not check anything. I've heard others stories where the officer went though all the paperwork and checked numbers on engine & trans. Ultimately they are looking for stolen parts.

I really can't see them giving you a hard time on the bumpers (or lack there of) on a coupe. Again this is my opinion but cant see that happening.

The big thing here in Illinois is the taxes. Make sure you pay the taxes on the kit within 90 days of taking possession. They will fine you if you don't. It's not insane $ but who wants to throw a couple hundred bucks down the toilet. This state is all about F you pay me these days.

Shoot me a PM if you wish to talk more. I'll edit this post later when I find the guy down in Springfield's info.

Can't speak for coupes, but agree with everything that Bryan said. It all depends on who comes to do the inspection. Based on my experience and the stories of others I believe most of the inspectors are good to work with.

Hey I recently registered my coupe in Illinois (May of 2021). As others mentioned a few phone calls to Springfield were required. There is a knowledgeable gentleman named Jim down there that does good work, call and talk to him (217)-785-4861, you may have to ask sometimes someone else picks up and they suck. Mine was registered using the forms for specially constructed vehicle. Long story short they send you a packet, it has all the forms and what not. Fill them out, print out some pictures of the front back and sides, include copies of bills of sale for engine / transmission and the ORIGINAL MCO as Jim will explain and send them back (via some form of tracked mail). A week or two later the secretary of state police will call you to schedule the inspections. Bumpers were not an issue for my guy, but he did check most items (wipers, signals, belts, horn, etc.) and even made to start it up, verified transmission and engine ID tags vs paperwork submitted etc. I got the idea my guy was a little more thorough than most though. If you pass they will issue a VIN on the spot. My guy let me locate and drill mine with his approval, and he attached with special rivets. They send the info back to Springfield and a week or so later you get a title, then you can go get plates and start driving.

I was searching posts on paying taxes in Illinois and ran across yours. I just received my MK4 kit and need to pay the tax man. Can you tell me who I need to contact or the correct forms to fill out to satisfy Illinois? Thanks.

Hi Matt - I am in lake county I built and registered my mk4 in 2018. It was actually a fairly simple process. You need to fill out all the Illinois forms, pay the fees, and then they send someone out to verify the car is roadworthy. They verified lights, horn, safety items, that it ran ( I didn’t have the side pipes on at the time). After being at my shop for half hour, he added the Illinois tag on the driver door frame. It even had the state outline in the rivits.
He never asked or looked at bumpers.
I would say don’t overthink it. Get all the paperwork going and dive in. Should be a smooth experience like I had.
BYW - I received my coupe in September and building away. Hopefully in late 2023 I have them back to inspect this one
