As shown in photo. Will this gasket work? What are the passages for?

try turning the gasket over. If that doesnt work then it will not work. I believe that there are 4 different water pump gaskets for small block Ford.

I just replaced my water pump and ordered FellPro gaskets. The pump came with gaskets, but I was told the blue ones were better. Long story short, the blue ones I bought didn't fit the pump to timing cover, so I used what came with the pump along with some black RTV around the two water ports and all is good.

David,
Functionally yes, but a gasket that comes closer to the impeller and the pockets probably exists.
The two partially bordered chambers are only cast dead-end lightening pockets, which reduces porosity in the housing.

The flow path is from the radiator (bottom) into the nipple in your right hand. The water goes to the impeller center and is centrifugally flung out the tangent passages to enter the block.
One heater hose nipple also feeds the impeller, the other goes to the pressure side.

Hi David

I ran into a similar problem, my overhaul gasket set came with several different water pump gaskets and none seemed to be the correct one. I ended up going to to the parts store and buying a roll of gasket material and making my own.

Thanks John

Great idea John!

Thanks. I had forgotten about that approach.
