View Full Version : Coyote won't crank - suggestions? * SOLVED *

This weekend I completed most wiring and decided to fire up the beast. This is a gen 2 coyote crate. Wired according to instructions.

So I turned the key to run and heard the fuel pump and all kinds of other things come to life. After a few cranks it came to life and ran pretty good. I turned the key to off and looked for leaks, etc. So far so good. Tried to start it again and it would crank but not fire up. Then after a few minutes it stopped cranking.

I figured it was a dead battery and put it on a charger, but still nothing. Now I turn the key to run, I hear the fuel pump and see the pressure go up plus other sounds. But turning to start does nothing. No clicking, no relay sounds, nothing.

The starter works, the fuses are okay. And I had to leave town for work for a few days... When I get home, what do you suggest I look into?

Thanks!
Jason

I'd hook up a obd2 adapter and run an app on your phone to read any fault codes. I've used a "Veepeak Mini Bluetooth OBD2 adapter" that you can buy from amazon and the software is usually free to download.

Mark,

Thanks - I should have said in my first post that I did connect an odb2 adapter and no ECU codes were logged.

I'd look at the ignition request connection. Check that the pigtail connections are not loose. The gen 2 has two clutch switches. Are both of those functional or is one not engaged properly? You have gas in the tank?

*** SUCCESS!!! ***

...You have gas in the tank?

This question was the key to solving it. When I read this question I was reminded of a post I read previously that said there was something in the coyote that would prevent cranking if fuel was too low. That got me thinking how would the coyote know since the fuel level sender only goes to the gauges, not the coyote. So I figured it must be that it's watching fuel pressure. After turning the pressure regulator down to 30, it fired right up!!

Previously we had pressure set closer to the recommended 55 psi. Is that not correct?
Thank you!

55 psi with engine off is the correct fuel pressure for a gen2 coyote.

Thanks. That is what I thought, so I'm not sure why it wouldn't crank with the pressure set at 55psi according to the regulator gauge, but I am out of town until later this week. I'll start dialing up the pressure when I get home and see what happens. Maybe we misread the gauge, maybe there is a problem with the gauge, but at least it now fires up and idles great.
