View Full Version : Photos of Brake Line Routing for IRS with 12.88" Wilwood Brakes?

Wondering if anyone has photos to share of how they routed their braided and hard brake lines for the IRS and the 12.88" Wilwood set-up. There are quite a few brackets on the frame (with holes for running various lines, seemingly). My F5 kit came with some clips for the AN couplings, so I don't want to start drilling and mounting stuff to the frame if I don't have to.

Thanks,

Haven’t received my kit yet but after reading and studying the assembly manual, I’m glad you asked this. I was kinda concerned about this by just reading the manual. Eager for some answers . Lol.

Guys, this isn't a 'model' car build, where part A goes to part C and insert F into G. Many of the things required to build these require critical thinking and decision making on your part. When you're working on your build, take the time to study and think about 'where and why'. It's very rewarding to make your own decisions and solve the task at hand. In the end, you'll KNOW your car, and you can fix it.Don't be one of those guys who just wants the answer and not take the time and effort to know why.

Yeah, I know, right? The manual seems to gloss-over the routing for IRS. Maybe I'll check the F5 sites to see if there any supplemental instructions.

I agree with what you're saying. But I don't want to paint myself in a corner by routing lines through pre-drilled holes in the frame only to find out later that they were intended for something else. I don't mind messing-up on bodywork or cosmetic stuff, but when it comes to brakes, I don't want to second-guess.

Many folks discuss/show brake and fuel line routing in their build threads. Many ways to skin that cat. I completely agree that there's no harm in seeing how others have done it to avoid potential gotchas. If you haven't already, take a look at EdwardB's excellent roadster build thread here (https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?18591-EdwardBs-Mk4-8674-20th-Anniversary-Build). He shows how he routed his lines very clearly. I routed my lines in a very similar way, as shown in my build thread.

I agree and one thing I would recommend is remember accessibility for maintenance. When you are installing brake lines much of the sheetmetal may not be installed. This is great for access when installing. But remember when you maintain the system you will need access from below.

Thanks for the reference to EdwadB's build. Some good photos in there on the rear brake lines.

I have ABS, so I won't show my bird's nest of plumbing up front.

Thanks for sharing those. Never heard of gravel guard before. I leave out in the country, and many people have gravel driveways to the paved secondary roads. So, generally more rocks than in the city. And being a winter city, there is always lots of grit and small gravel on the roads in spring, before road crews can sweep everything up. I may have to look into this product.

This is how I ran my rear lines (I have photos of the front too if you need). The world really is your oyster when it comes to how you want to run them, mostly a matter of what you can get your hands to, and how accurate you can bend the lines. The main rule I was presented when running mine was to keep the brake lines on the outside of the 4" tube so that an issue with the drivetrain/driveshaft won't cut them.
