This happened literally right in front of me. I was headed towards Denver just west of Fort Morgan yesterday when we saw smoke ahead and then a huge ball of flames went up. The two trucks in front of me stopped and blocked traffic to prevent anyone from driving through the inferno.

About five minutes after we were stopped, the fire department arrived and quickly put the flames out.

Wow, hopefully the occupants were able to escape.

Quite a few years ago my oldest daughter Megan was behind a similar debacle.
In this case, a fuel truck was involved and it was a mess.

Like you, Meg saw a huge mushroom cloud and then heard a massive explosion.
She stopped in her tracks, turned her little green truck around, then proceeded down the emergency in the opposite direction.

Do You Know If They Escaped?

Nobody was injured. It looked like they had time to pull over to the shoulder and tried to get some of their belongings out of the car before it went up.

Some fire departments have been training their men, to always approach a burning vehicle on a diagonal to the corner of the vehicle. Apparently this could prevent injury from getting hit by debris from shock absorbers exploding. The wheels can act as a shield from this. I still see firemen standing directly behind, or in front of a vehicle, when hosing them down. Apparently even gas filled hood and tailgate support struts can explode.
Bystanders should pay heed to this as well.
