View Full Version : Gen 2 coyote Spectre intake - which restrictor in MAF tube?

Hey all,

I've got a gen 2 coyote that I started and go-karted for the first time recently. It starts easily and idles fine, but when trying to drive it down the block and back it surges and bucks quite a bit, to the point that I have to slip the clutch a lot to get it to move. I'm already talking to Lund about a custom tune, but wanted to eliminate all obvious sources of issues. One grey area in my mind is the intake. I purchased the Spectre intake along with the engine from Mike Forte. It came with two plastic restrictors that can go in the straight section that the MAF sensor attaches to. The FFR coyote install instructions show to glue it into the MAF tube with some RTV, but the instructions don't say which one to use. One looks more restrictive than the other. I installed the less restrictive one of the two, which is what appears to be shown in the FFR instructions based on the photo. FWIW - I also installed the Treadstone honeycomb air flow smoother on the inlet side of that tube. Does this sound right, or should I have used the more restrictive one?

Thanks,
John

If you are going to use Lund to tune your engine/ecu, do not glue in a reducer. Lund will advise you whether it is needed or not. My thoughts are, Lund will tune it with the given tube ID. The honey comb, if used will need to be up stream of the MAF sensor.

For sure the honeycomb airflow straightener is upstream of the MAF. It's in the tapered section at the front of the reducer. Yes, the reducer is already in there, but it wouldn't be all that hard to remove it if needed. It's just held in with a small bead of RTV. I'll see what Lund has to say about it.

Here is another source of information and parts. Contact Guy Smith at Spectre Performance. He specializes in assembling parts from all K&N, Spectre, and AEM lines of intake systems to fit custom applications. He assisted me in putting together a intake system for the 2nd Gen Coyote in my 70 Mustang. Very helpful to work with and he does not care if you buy the parts from his companies or from a retailer like Summit. My system was a bit pricey, but I got exactly what and the fit I wanted.

I used the largest restrictor. The Coyote should run smoothly prior to a toon. Possible things to check..... Check your gas pressure, should be 55 psi. Also check your MAF sensor, making sure it's not in backwards. If I unplug my MAF sensor, it will run at low to moderate speed but not much above 2,500 RPM. Did that once by accident.

Check your gas pressure, should be 60 psi.

Curious as to why you are saying to set fuel pressure at regulator to 60 PSI when the install instructions from Ford Performance say 55 PSI for the 2nd Gen Coyote. Maybe you are thinking of a 3rd Gen engine with the direct injection which has a higher fuel pressure requirement?

Curious as to why you are saying to set fuel pressure at regulator to 60 PSI ......

Yes, you are correct. I corrected my post. I looked at my fuel pump specs and it says 60 psi (max).
