View Full Version : Where To Use RTV on Water Pump Replacement?
I got my old water pump off without much drama and still have a little cleanup to do before replacing it with my new pump. Before I do, I want to ask the experts where I should apply a bit of RTV?
I'm assuming around the water ports (looked like there was some there when I pulled the pump off.

Do I need a dab on any of the bolts or any other locations?
Thanks,
Dave

I gave up using any gaskets in the pump and between the pump and that timing chain cover. What finally cured the leaks was Permatex Right Stuff. No leaks since 2012!

I smear my gaskets in ultra black RTV on both sides and then install. finger tighten the bolts first, then torque to spec after an hour. make sure you put some thread sealant on the bolts as well.
Thanks all. It's back together and letting the RTV set. I'll torque later... looks like about 15lbs in an alternating sequence and then 60 degrees after that.
Okay -- Success! I got it all back together and filled it with coolant and brought the car up to temperature and no leaks!

Although successful, this was definitely a preventable issue and I won't neglect things that I think can wait in the future. I literally had to flush the cooling system five times to get it clean. :o
