I havent been driving my car much lately. When I do a cold start (Florida cold) the engine cranks well but there is a little effort to get it started. The last time I drove it it it wouldn't start at all after a 3 mile ride down the street - cranked it until battery wen dead. I left the car for a few hours charged the battery (a new optimus) and it started up with several cranks. Definitely smell fuel when cranking.

Any thoughts?

TIA
Keith

My opinion of Optima batteries is well known around here. Start by getting rid of it.

My bad. I'm used to the other forum which has my info.
Anyhow it is a 302 with a relatively new Quick Fuel SS650.

It would be a good idea to describe you fuel delivery system - mechanical fuel pump verse electric, return lines if any, fuel filters, location of fuel pressure gauge etc. If you know where the timing is set, the fuel pressure during starting, good air flow into the carb, and even some info on carb jetting, there are members here that are able to give really good advice. I'd start with fuel pressure. The other variable is spark, make sure it's working as it should. Also make sure the fuel lines don't run along hot parts like the headers. After hot, is it able to start with starting fluid (be careful)?
