View Full Version : Back cowl doesn't fit right, body fitment issue?

I put my body back on today. I noticed this when I had it on last time. The cowl in the back doesn't sit right on the passenger side. I think it can be manipulated I have set a couple 20 lb weight on it in the mean time. I thought it might be the cuby wall but that sits pretty evenly on both sides and has some play so that doesn't seam to be it. I would appreciate by those that know, is this something I should worry about? If so what should I do?

Thank you

look from the trunk back into that area and see if you need to trim any aluminum from the top of the panel.of the cockpit and lateral aluminum panel heading rearward. also did you trim any off of your body where the lip interfaces with the rear cockpit aluminum? Good luck.

Do you have bulb seal on the rear wall, between the trunk sides? If so remove it.

I do not, but I do have bulb seal on the cubby wall

Did the MK4 have the same problem some of the earlier models did, with a corner of the frame just rear of the door striker, contacting the body? I know that was an issue for some builders not getting the body to sit down correctly. They would grind off a tad.

I think it’s tight but not holding it up necessary. I removed the bulb seal from the cubby and it sits better now. Not perfect but much closer. Might need to trim a couple points.

No, they do not.

Also take a look at the angled sections of the rear cockpit wall. If they are spread out, you'll find the bulb seal gets crushed against the body at the door striker (on my car it was more so on the right side than on the left) which prevents the upper edge of the aluminum from sealing against the body. Note the large gap where the aluminum starts to arch over towards the center in the pictures below.

By trimming those outer panels ~3/8” on the right and 1/4” on the left I was able to make the gap at the top of the arch go away.
