View Full Version : Coolant Fill Neck Question

So, during the last couple of times I ran the engine, I had a small but steady coolant drip from the forward hose that attaches to the coolant fill neck. I tightened the hose clamp, but that did not fix the problem. The leak does stop after the coolant leaks enough to not be in the upper hose area. I have a few pics of the fill neck below. The first is my actual setup. The next three are pics I captured from Amazon where I bought the fill neck. It did come with the cap, and that generates another question. My guess is that I need to use the rubber sleeves that came with the FFR corrugated metal coolant hose to make a more secure connection to the fill neck. Another choice would be to buy a new fill neck that fits better. This is not a huge issue, but I was hoping that someone could tell me if I have the wrong fill neck, or if the cap (1.0) is the wrong type / size / pressure rating. Thanks in advance for any comments.

Without seeing it in person it is hard to tell, but to me it looks like the rubber hose between the filler and the corrugated pipe is too big for the filler neck side.
This might be fixed by using the components that come with the kit. The hose you used to connect the filler to the corrugated pipe comes with a smaller diameter hose inside to use as an adapter for smaller components. For example, on mine I had to put the smaller diameter hose on the thermostat then the larger diameter hose over it. It was a pain to fit and I had to use some WD40 to get it to slide over, but it made for a better fit. On the corrugated hose side I didn't use that smaller diameter adapter.
Did you put that smaller diameter hose on the filler neck before the larger one? When I look at the picture it looks like you didn't. Have you tried that? It might solve your issue.
Another tip: some people have had issues with the corrugated hose coming out of the rubber hose even if the clamps are tight. I put rivets on the end to give something for the clamp to hold better. Some people use round headed screws. I clamped the hose inside the rivets. I had the same issue with the thermostat and put some self tapping screws to do the same thing. Something to consider.
Here is a picture of what I am talking about on the thermostat water neck. The hose clamp is below the screws.

Another option that MANY on here recommend are the Boig hoses. They look great and have phenomenal reviews. Plus, these would fix all of your issues. But they are expensive, so I stuck with what the kit came with...

Thanks hineas. I did the exact same thing on the thermostat neck. For the fill neck, I agree that the hose is larger than the receiver on the fill neck. I did not use the sleeve, but I did assume that this might solve the leak issue. I guess I'm more concerned with the cap and the right pressure.

You did say that you were thinking of using that sleeve! Maybe I should read the post closer...
About the cap, are you asking if you have the right pressure or if the cap is the right physical size for the neck?

I believe the 1.0 cap is in bar, so that is a 14.5 psi cap. I have read on the forum that some use 16 psi. My kit came with a 20 psi cap. I would guess the 1.0 bar (14.5 psi) would be too low but I'm no expert in this area.
The few reviews on Amazon people had issues with the cap. Caps are cheap and if it is causing you problems just replace it.

Thanks again hineas. The cap seems to fit, but I don't like the quality of it. I'm going to follow your suggestions. I'll get a new cap tomorrow. Just wanted to see what the pressure rating should be.

The Boig cool tube are nice, but I agree they are spendy. I installed the lower cool tube on my coyote and am pretty impressed with the quality and fit of it. However, as far as your leak issue goes, another thing you can try is the Gates Power Grip hose clamps. They're shrink-to-fit hose clamps that conform to uneven surfaces, beads on inlets, etc. I'm personally not a fan of worm drive clamps (OK, I hate them). I think the Gates Power Grip clamps would shrink down into the "valleys" of the corrugated hose and provide a much better clamp than a worm drive clamp.

Thanks for the heads up John. I would love to go with the Boig Tubes, but so far, I'm good with the corrugated. I will look up the Gates clamps this morning and make the purchase.

FYI - Summit Racing sells them under the title of "Allstar Performance Power Grip Clamps" but they're the same Gates-branded clamps.

Thanks again John. I've just been reading about them and I can't believe that everybody isn't talking about them. The clamps are a bit pricey, but seem to be worth the money. Lots of peace of mind, and a better look. Gonna pull the trigger

Gates PowerGrip SB clamps were originally designed for silicone hose applications, they don't dig into the soft silicone like a worm drive clamp would. They do work very good.

14.5, 16, or 20 will be fine. 20 may may leaks a little more common. 16 is by far the most often used. Be sure to get the correct style cap when you buy a new one. One made to allow coolant to be sucked back into the engine from the overflow tank.
