Has anyone retrofitted thier MKIV manual steering with electric? Especially the programmable type that can go away above parking lot speeds. I'm starting out with manual steering--just started my build--and if I want more caster down the road/easier steering at slow speeds I would like the option to install an ePowerSteering unit or similar. Having said that, should I instead buy/install during my build to avoid a difficult access down the road in order to retrofit? Thanks!

If you know you'd like it, maybe later, just do it now while you're building. It's easier to plan and fit now while nothing else is in the way. Just do it, you'll NEVER regret it

x2 on what Rich said. I fitted it later to a RHD roadster with a Coyote. It was a lot of work to get everything lined up. Far easier at chassis stage.

I retrofit an epowersteering unit to my MkIV after it had been on the road over a year. It wasn't that hard, but it definitely would have been easier during the build. I really like the unit, and the extra caster makes a huge difference along with the improved ease of driving at low speeds. It really, it makes the car much easier to handle around town while tracking/centering improved significantly at speed. The unit has a dial adjustor for on the fly changes, but I typically leave mine set at about 1/4 of the available assist.

If you think you will add it later, you will be better off adding it now. Adding it after the build is complete is doable, but access is limited and a minor "slip" can damage your paint. That said, I did retrofit #8317 after it was "complete" (they are never really finished!), and it was relatively easy. I am glad I did it as my old arms are not as strong as they used to be!
Nothing on these cars gets easier with the body on, so earlier in the process is going to be easier. One option you might want to look at is the package that one of our supporting vendors has developed specifically for the MK4:

Thank you all. As usual, this community makes the build that much more enjoyable.
