Getting ready to finally FINALIZE my complete kit order for a MK4. I am from California and wondering if anyone knows the current things required to get the car registered to drive on the road. I understand by the time I finish the build the laws and regulations may change.

SB100 (special construction) registration, CA allows 500 per year. It is quite the process, readers digest once your car is drivable pay your reg fees, brake and tail light inspection, visit CHP VIN assignment, BAR for smog check then you are done. Sounds simple but it took me 4 months and some even longer. There are quite a few write ups on the process. Good news is once your fees are paid and you secure a SB # you can drive the car while all this is happening.

Does this mean it would be better to register in January? Does the "Special Construction" registration ever go over 500?

I do not believe it has hit 500 for quite a few years. I started mine this year back in March and my number is 64. Just build your car and when you are completed start the process.

I vaguely remember (SOP these days) seeing someone in one of the California sub-forums who recently registered his car and the SB100 number was in the low 200's. Yes, only 500 vehicles can be registered each year, but my understanding is that they haven't reached that limit for many years. You shouldn't have trouble getting the car registered no matter when you go to the DMV, and the crowds seem to be much bigger in January.

when filling out the registration form (343) do I put the FFR Serial in the VIN section? or leave blank?

All depends on your CHP agent. Some give a new VIN and some use the FFR serial number. I just saw CHP last month and they took the FFR serial number as the VIN.
