So I got a Mustang 8.8 rear end out of a wrecked 80k mile '96 GT. I'm not sure if it's the original for the car, has 3.73 gears. The ID tag is missing. The FFR manual says the width should be 61 1/8 inches. Where are they measuring this from? axle flange to axle flange, rotor to rotor, or what? Yes, I've spent most of the morning searching the forums and the web and have not found an answer I'm satisfied with...... Is there any other definitive way to date it?

Hopefully one of the experts chimes in soon.
I believe the housing on the 94-98 is the same width as the 87-93 and the only difference is the axles are longer for the disc brakes. Depending on the tire width you intend to run this may or may not be a problem. I have 275s on the rear and could very easily have run with the wider axle. Using 315s would have created an interference issue with the body.
I have an 87 housing and converted it from drum to disc brakes using a kit. Here's a link to a forum vendor selling exactly the same kit.https://www.northracecars.com/c-clip_brakes.html.
Looking at the replacement caliper mounts I think it narrows the width about 5/8" per side.
