Has anyone found a way to make the FFR Roadster S/S Side Pipes quieter without cutting them apart? Maybe some kind of flexible baffle that could be inserted in the end and then set-screwed underneath to keep it in place? TIA, Rod

I've also seen someone post about cutting the curved portion of the pipe off, stuffing some baffle/auger inside and putting a stainless curved tip on that can attach w/ a hose clamp type of clamp. If using a heat shield on top, you'd never see the seam.

Thanks. I saw these removable tips on the forum some time back, but lost the link. I'm trying to reduce the exhaust noise for an upcoming 1 day track event. Grandson & I will be doing the Woodward Dream Cruise tomorrow afternoon. One day early, but still a ton of cars and lots of fun.

Here's a link to a thread I started years ago. For the most part I followed Norm B's excellent design and instruction, and am very happy with the results. I did have to cut side pipe tips off, and used a band clamp to reattach them once the inserts are installed. Norm's instruction are found around the middle of thread. I also remember seeing somewhere a design, similar to Norms, in which the patriot baffle is cut in half, and then reassembled with a spring between the two halves. The spring enables you slip the insert in through the curved tip. That seemed really difficult to, so I didn't try it. Here's a picture of my exhaust tip and clamp.

I bought the GasNGo quiet pipes. Haven't installed them, I'm sure others can weigh in here but they are pricey and I guess I'll find out if worth it.

Anecdotally, my tubes became quieter after ceramic coating, at least at idle.

I have them on my MK2 the PO installed them. I have to say they are considerably quieter than I expected but still fairly loud when you jump on the gas. I can easily hear my little blue tooth speaker when cruising and carry on a conversation with the passenger. I think you'll like them.

+1 for Gas 'n touring pipes, expensive but worth the investment and imo much quieter than the FFR pipes. The FFR pipes will also continue to get louder as the fiberglass blows out which will not happen with Gas 'n pipes. Your engine type will also dictate how loud some pipes are, just installed a set of Gas 'n touring on a 302 and was surprised how much quieter they are compared to my 427.

I always look at the posts about how to make the FFR pipes no quite so loud and, almost without exception, there are replies to wear ear protection or spend a small fortune on some new pipes. There is never a solution on how to modify them without having to cut them. Maybe there is no solution?

Even if you can get the sidepipes quiet the wind noise will make you appreciate earplugs. Not an issue running in town but at cruising speed they'll help.

OK, I understand the earplugs will work for me, but I'll also have to get the DB police at this track to wear a pair also. Apparently, Waterford Hills in Michigan has a 75db max on the back straight. WTF? That's where you want to be on it! I'm not sure, but I don't think my neighbor's 4-door Buick could pass that test.

I don't think there's anyway you're getting to 75db with side pipes. My mod and angling the tips down made it quieter inside the car but, it has got to be way louder than 75db at full throttle acceleration. Rent a Tesla!!!

75 db??? That is NORMAL traffic noise level!

Better not have a radio on because it will be too loud. Oh, don't take a vacuum cleaner either...

People have used exhaust augers, supertrapps, exhsust cones, etc. But I never found anybody on the forum getting below 75 db... Also, most of these have to be modified to fit into our side pipes with the turnout.

Waterford is the issue and yes, unrealistic. A lot depends on how they measure. Never run there but understand that it is a nice track for factory exhaust cars.
Neither Grattan or Gingerman make a big deal about the noise. Both are a few hours west of Waterford.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts on this. I think the Cobra will be staying home for this particular track day. Instead, we'll be taking the wife's 350Z. Neither one of us has been on a track before so it should still be plenty of fun and no earplugs required.

Alittle more involved but probably cheaper then buying a complete new setup if you can weld it yourself and then get it coated.. Has anyone ever just cut the muffler section out and welded in a tube muffler from say, Flowmaster, or Borla etc...

I made a set and they made my car sound like a tractor. My wife, who HATES how loud the Cobra is, said "take them out!".
Not sure if I still have them, but if I do, you are welcome to them.

N2, Careful what you ask for. I have done the opposite and it is not a trivial task.
I bought a Jaguar XKR with five mufflers and it was very quiet.
The SS canister is two laminations, making re-weld difficult. I pulled out the glass and steel mesh, then cut out the baffle and tubes. I replaced it with an "X" joint and extensions.
The welds are OK under the car, on the side of the car, maybe not. The result is not dramatic but I should have repacked the can before welding it shut. Some noise comes through the muffler skin. That noise quality is not great.
Inside the car the sound is not annoying; outside, a little more sound. The V8 engine likes the tuning, power and mileage.

Flowmaster Slimlines were the go to solution. I have a set. Unfortunately, they have been discontinued.

I know ... another recommendation to spend $$$ on Gas-N pipes isn't in the spirit of what was asked, but it is the result most that ask are looking for. The actual dB level of the FFR vs. Gas-N pipes isn't that dramatic from what I've seen in other threads that tested them. However, the sound is much lower frequency and mellow with the Gas-N vs. the FFR. The Gas-N pipes take the harshness out of the sound and in spite of the similar dB values, make it possible to talk at 50 mph in a roadster. My Gas-N pipes are the "standard", not the touring (quiet) version that Georgie also makes.

I didn't mean to dissect the existing muffler but to cut it off on each end and just weld in a whole new round canister in it's place. Could actually use a longer tube ( if available ) and to push the exit back alittle more maybe and while your at it angle it down more at that point as well...

I took my FFR stainless pipes off and installed Bob Boig’s Quiet Pipes.
I was shocked at how much quieter they were. When I first had them, I actually thought maybe they were too quiet!
I’m used to it now and they are plenty loud enough.
