I've been considering a Type 65 Coupe build for several months but have a a couple of issues to sort out. First, I need to sell my boat because I can't afford 2 expensive hobbies. Second, I need a plan to meet the registration requirements for New York. I received the registration package from the DMV and there are a number of items (bumpers, front plates, emission controls, etc) that appear to be significant challenges for the Type 65. I would hate to spend a lot of time and money to end up with something that can't be used on the street (legally). I'm hoping to hear from folks that can shed some light on the the requirements and how to meet them. Also, if there are any Type 65 owners in Up-State NY I'd love to hear from you.
Thanks in Advance,
Jim

This is a great question. I cannot speak from experience yet but if there are also any Type 65 owners in Illinois I would like to know as well before pulling the trigger. I would assume the front "bumper" is the nose and internal support structure. Many modern vehicles have plastic/fiberglass/rubber front bumpers with small impact areas near the frame. I guess one could argue that the bumper is the nose. More modern vehicles have some sort of impact or shock area behind those contact points. Maybe that's also a question for factory five. How they design their new space age chassis for impact. The emissions and frontal plates could be state to state takes on registration. Persons I have spoken to from Illinois say to make sure to get that 65 designation. That may be important as older cars did not have the same emissions standards. These are beautiful recreations of a 65 vehicle. Take that information with during registration. Frontal plates issue could be one of those laws that are there but not enforced, but I am sure a plate bracket mounted beneath one of the lights wouldn't be too horrible if push came to shove. The most important plate is always the back one if they are chasing you down.

I wish I could help. I am from Wisconsin and only can speak of what I learned is required in my neck of the woods. I am sure someone with NY registering experience must be out there. The forum will come through.

Every state will be different. The Coupe tosses another element into the fray. It was never a production car, unlike the Cobra. Another concern is insurance. Getting those ducks in a row can be a challenge.

Call the Specialty dept fpr the DMV, I think we can use an interal bumper attached to the frame, also you can use an older engine with out smog stuff, I have done this for my last cobra

Following this thread. I just ordered my 65 coup and I'm in NY. Awaiting my packet from NYS DMV, but I chatted with them on the phone and it sounds like bumpers are a real issue. Curious what others have done

Take look here too. Although, looks like Oxide's pics are gone showing the internal bumper design he used.

I recently contacted NYDMV and this was there response:
"The application for applying for a VIN number on a custom vehicle is the MV-272.1, which you can pick up at your local DMV office. This has instructions on what to send and the requirements. After submitting everything to our office, we will schedule an appointment with you to have the new VIN affixed."
I don't know if this is the information you received and I have not had a chance to go to DMV to get a copy for myself.
