View Full Version : Clicking when accelerating - Potential exhaust leak???
When accelerating there is a clicking sound and not sure what it is. My first thought was a potential belt issue, but BluePrint said it's most likely an exhaust leak.

Hope the video link works for you guys.
Engine is a 427 from BP, ~100 miles on the engine
Headers and side pipes are Gas-N
- Engine to headers use the traditional gaskets provided by Gas-N
- Headers to side pipes use Prematex Ultra Copper silicone gasket
Thoughts?

Yep, it sounds like an exhaust leak.

Thanks for confirming. If you have any suggestions on how to identify where it’s leaking please let me know.
I might try some soap water and a leaf blower technique tomorrow.

If you mean blowing into the side pipes towards the engine, I wouldn’t.
A tech at Edelbrock suggested I do that to check for a possible exhaust leak.
Not with my new motor. :-)

Most times you can see black sooty deposits at the header to head interface around the leaking area. You may need to look from below.

Get a 2-3ft piece of something like a garden hose. Hold one end against you ear and move the other end around the exhaust flange until you hear the noise. Also, often looking under each of the header to head joints

will show a dark area where the exhaust has somewhat blackened the aluminum head.

Look for the dark exhaust stain where the leak may occur. Also try holding a rag over the end of the pipe at idle and see if you can locate the exhaust blowing out. On my first Gen ! build the collector/muffler leaked between the 4 pipes where they were welded together. Since way back then we weren't using stainless or chrome pipes much, it was just an easy touch up with the welder once we found the leak.
I think I found the main problem. The passenger side O2 sensor has a plug nut on it and it was loose. No idea how it could of stayed on for so long. Nut was retighten and some loctite was used. Hopefully it says sealed.
I also found on both headers gave off a tiny bit of air flow at the adjustable section. By tiny bit I mean I could barely feel it. Specially at where the bolt is tighten (finger in picture is pointing at it). I found the bolt to be black in the middle. This occurs on both headers. Any suggestions on how to seal it completely or is a tiny bit ok?
