View Full Version : Rear calipers alternatives?

My rear calipers (default mustang calipers, I think — not wildwood) do get stuck on a handbrake pull. I did a spring mode last year, and that seemed to work for a while, but now the problem is back: the last inch or so doesn't expand, so I get to smell the cooking pads. instead of trying more springs, what's the alternative? what would be good bolt-on calipers to install there? (I have 15in wheels)

I would check your cable routing and the transition from the 2 cable to the handle. There can often be interference in the tunnel that doesn't allow free movement of the cables. I've build dozens of cars with the GT and Cobra rear brakes and never had a hanging caliper.

I wish it was my case. a number of threads with "spring" mod for sticking handbrake says it's not just me

As Frank points out, it's not the calipers, but the cables. If you have run the cables under the frame, it's an issue

I just ran into this with 2 sets of calipers supplied by FFR. Could not get them to retract all the way. There must be some binding inside the caliper. This was checked with the cables off. I bought new ones from a parts store and the problem went away.

Thanks, Mike. I wonder if I should roll the dice with the FFR again, or buy something like that from PBR or someone else.
