View Full Version : Mk3 Assembly manual. Steering column pics needed.
I have a Mk3 that I am having steering issues with. I think from what I have seen that there are 2 washers that take up play in the lower shaft that slides into the other. Are there screws that hold the steering shafts in place under the dash? Is there somewhere to look at an assembly manual online?
Thank you

There are set screws on the bearing just behind the dash. Also the bearing a the fire wall. With these loose you should be able to separate the upper and lower shafts. Many of us don't use the washers to take up the slack. Instead drill and tap a couple of 1/4-20 holes in the lower shaft and use sets screws to remove all slack. I usually drill them about 4 inches apart on the same side of the tube. Use loctite on them and just snug them up enough to stop the wiggle. You don't want to make them so tight that the column will not collapse in an accident.

Just to clarify Mike's description of the set screws...there are TWO on the bearing just behind the dash. There might be two on the bearing at the front of the foot box, but I don't recall (and the picture in my manual doesn't show that level of detail).

Thank you all so much! The Set screw on the firewall is facing inside the engine bay on my car. I had pulled it out and can see where they had drilled thru the outer flat. I think this was to use the set screw to eliminate the play to the inner shaft. Problem is the hole does not line up. You can see about 1/4 of the hole drilled. I wanted to try to get this to align with the set screw in the firewall bearing mount. The bearing and outer shaft that runs thru the bearing seen stuck together. Once I get these to align I will be able to use a set screw to take up the slack. I may pull out the inner splined shaft and put the washers in it also. I think I may be able to loosen the upper bearing set screws and get the shaft to move enough to align the hole for the lower set screw.
The manuals are a great help. I was able to see the issue I have on my transmission. It is a TKO 500. It needs to be trimmed to clear the 4" frame tube and a 3/4" space used under the mount. I could not see how the trans angle could be correct without cutting this but didn't want to without conformation. I had already determined the 3/4" spacer needed.
My last issue is wanting more brake power. Upgraded pads are in already. I have a single master. I am not sure of the bore size but I want to measure it and go to a smaller bore for more power. They are manual brakes.
Will let you all know how it turns out.
Thanks so much.
