I recently replaced my oil pressure sender as the original one went out. replacement sender has been ok for about 100mi but has recently been showing me a drop in pressure when idling and in neutral (oscillates between 45-50psi). Under load it seems to sit around 70-75psi. Seems a bit high under load for me. With my previous sender, my pressures were pretty consistent between 55-60psi.

Sender is plugged directly in the block (again) without an extension. I have the materials to make a remote sender location using some braided fuel line and AN connectors.

Is this a sign of another failing sender, or an engine issue? I've read that oscillating oil pressures are a sign of some failing internals. Engine is a new rebuild, ~300mi on the odometer.

Additionally, is it just me or does the fuel gauge sender seem to measure in 1/8 tank increments. It seems like when my fuel is going down, it drops in a stairstep fashion, about 1/8 tank at a time. If this is the case, I'll just need to be careful once my gauge reads 1/8th tank left.

Same answer posted to the other forum...

Is your engine fully warmed up when you notice the oil pressure fluctuations? Cold engine = higher oil pressures than when warm.

Fully warm, my 302 typically shows 30-35 psi at idle, and 50-55 when cruising around. When cold, add ~15 psi to both numbers. A high volume pump would increase those numbers from my standard volume pump.

Warm engine. Standard oil pump. I don't remember fluctuating pressures when idling vs under load.

Interesting. I have the exact same story! Changed the sender about 75 miles ago. Just notice the fluctuations at idle you are describing this evening. My hi has not changed as much though, still 55 to 60 consistently when driving. Not to concerned about an engine problem, I suspect the quality of these senders is sub par.
