Has anyone here built an electric MK4 with a Tesla drive unit?
I've seen this one. They used a Tesla drivetrain but not a FFR chassis: https://www.diyelectriccar.com/threads/tesla-powered-cobra-race-car.180761/
Also this one. They used an MK2 but not a Tesla drivetrain:
http://ffcars.com/threads/let-my-electric-roadster-begin.246129/
I'm planning to build an MK4 build with:
- Tesla Small Rear Drive Unit
- EV Controls T2C controller
- LG Chem JH3 batteries (fourteen 25.6v packs in series = 360V and 500A)
I'm looking at products from Zero EV, HSR, Stealth EV, Thunderstruck EV, and EV West.
Any advice???

Do not sign up for the Power Tour, just joking.

It’s gonna take a bunch of fabricating to get everything mounted, but you’re gonna have the coolest EV around. And that’s pretty cool.

This should be fun to watch! I hope you'll document everything in detail. The inspiration for many ideas come from the innovations of other builders!

Yes, a few years back someone did build an EV factory five roadster
Sorry not a Tesla.

This should be interesting to watch unfold. This is the future of hot rodding. Not sure I'll sign up, the the kids of today will be turning our old fossil fuel burners in to silent running electric speed demons.
I'm with you...this is the future! Just finished my GTM and now starting a scratch build Tesla based project. Big learning curve going from ice to ev. I'll be watching your project with interest!

A safe bet is to approach EV West and pay for a consultation fee. They have a kit for the 818, adapting from there should be faster and cuts on the risk factor link (https://www.evwest.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=40&products_id=233)

if setup correctly with traction control, etc... it would be terrifyingly fast!!

Where are you planning to put the batteries? I am curious what kind of range you would be looking at. By far the coolest ev on the planet when done

make battery packs that fit where the sidepipes go :)

You wanna be really cool buy a Tesla and convert it to a 427 Ford with Sidepipes!
Good luck with your project I'm sure it will sneak up on a lot of people, hard to do in a Cobra :)

I'm guessing/hoping that Factory Five is secretly designing a conversion kit. I can't wait.

Ford is introducing the Eluminator crate motor. I have seen projected cost at just under $4K. No controller or battery back support yet, but if Ford doesn't do it, the aftermarket will. My guess is the Eluminator will be featured at SEMA this year. Not the power of the Tesla unit, but not $30K either. The top of the line motor used in the performance version of the Mach E, would likely be a terror in a MK4.
Yes, probably the future especially in States like CA.

There is a guy in CA that has a dual tesla motor AWD cobra build. Pretty sure its not a FFR. I think he widened and lengthened the body. There are a few youtube videos out there and he is on Instagram as TeslaSandTruck.

In this build these guys separate the inverter from the motor to free up a lot of room. Bunch of custom work to do it though.

The EV West guys have a more traditional orientation mounted option as opposed to a motor being right at the axles and perpendicular:

One day, gotta get my MK IV done first, I'm planning on a FFR truck build with an electric drive. It's the way of the future and man they technology is getting really reliable and fast.

Truck would be a good way to go. You could modify the bed to hold the battery pack. Would be pretty sweet.

Yep unfortunately when you let the car get away from you, everyone around you will hear you swear, scream like a little girl and poop yourself. No loud exhaust to cover that up.

Update: I took the easy way out and ordered a Ford Racing 302 for my MK4 kit. Maybe I'll do an electric 818 for the next build.

Well, as a consolation to maybe not being as quick or "special", the auditory experience will be 100x better
