Batsford, I am in Half Moon Bay and in the process of painting a coupe and willing to help you out.
I have some of the build on my YouTube channel, Cobra Daytona Build
I painted a mk4 about three years ago for under $500 and it looks amazing.
Let me know.

Wow! Wish I lived on the left coast. I can't even buy the materials for $500.

$500?? Just my base and clear were $900. I probably had $500 in tape, sanding blocks, and sandpaper.
Only paint it yourself if it is something that you WANT to do for the experience. If you are doing it to save money, go get a job at McDonalds. You will earn enough money to pay Jeff in about half the time it takes to do it yourself.

I’d be interested to know how you pulled that off. Mine are going out the door with $1,800-2,000 costs for all of the cleaners, fillers, polyester and urethane primers & sealers plus base and clear using Evercoat and PPG products. That’s if they don’t get a tri-coat or exotic color and after my significant discount.
In California all you need to know is Ken Pike to the north and Jeff Miller to the south—-End of story ;)

I figured my $500 comment would get everyone's attention:)
I had some red and black from years ago so zero cost for all intensive purposes.
A gallon of primer from Summit racing for $100 and a gallon of clear for a little over $100 and the remaining in sandpaper, body filler and such.
I'd be willing to bet the car will be at Huntington beach in the fall as the new owner lives in the area. Turned out excellent and he is happy.
Red with black stripes and white pin stripes.
I do use the generic product, Omni to be specific as my friend once worked for a national paint company and admitted to me that the top shelf product is just re-labeled and sold at a much lower price to compete in that market.

I’ve already sanded $500 into dust on the floor... and I’m just getting started!! (Just kidding. It only feels like I have $500 worth of dust so far. My gosh there’s a lot of sanding)
As far as the original post... I’m doing my own body & paint. Not to save money, but because I wanted to do it. My only advice is this, if you’ve never done it but think your mentally and physically prepared for the amount of work, and dust, and sand paper, and body filler, and more sanding, and more sanding and more sanding.... I guarantee your not, you just think you are prepared for it. That’s been my experience. Did I mention there is a lot of dust and sanding?

Lots of sanding:). I will agree, way too much. I already have 6 hrs blocking the nose of the coupe.
Most people don't have any idea how much work it is to paint a car and the wear and tear on the body, the human body.

Once I did the sane thing and threw out any expectations of how long it would take to build my coupe, I felt comfortable tackling paint and body. Now I know that 8,10,$12K for a coupe with stripes is reasonable. I feel like paint day alone took a month off of my life. I am very proud of what I accomplished, but I don't think I will go there again. I have checked that box.

When people ask me what it was like, I tell them 3 months of prep and hard work followed by 24 hours of terror.

Oh! Pray tell! Just who this wealth of wisdom might be....nevermind....and by the way it was 132oz because there is more trouble waiting in a gallon of paint then actual paint....da Bat
