View Full Version : Is the 25th anniversary trunk lid a straight swap?

I like the new layout of the 25th anniversary trunk lid, and how the license plate now fits without having to modify the light. Does anyone know if the new trunk lid is a straight swap on a pre-25th car (about 2 years old)? I know the mold was also changed to accommodate the rectangular tail lights but I'm hoping that the area around the trunk lid wasn't changed.

Lids are interchangable...and the license plate lamp pad is STILL off center ;)

Perfect - thank you!

I'll let my paint and body guy deal with the off-center lamp pad :p

Jeff how much is the pad off center, I might be doing one soon. Havent dealt with the MK 4 deck lids.
Thanks,
Kenny

They're all that way Kenny, Mk4 as well as the earlier Mks. Not a problem if you aren't doing stripes but if you are you have to do some gymnastics with the layout that ultimately gets hidden by the license plate and lamp. If you don't, and simply "connect the dots" from the center of the lamp pad and trunk handle you'll wind up with the stripes angling to one side on the vertical surface of the trunk lid like these (I don't know whose cars they are and am only posting to illustrate, not offend).

That's the deal with these cars; things are off center, they aren't symmetrical, straight or the same right to left so you really can't put too much faith into measurements and most times have to rely on your eye to make them look right rather than be right ;)

Prolly couldn't tell with no stripes.

Those two examples set off my OCD...

Mine too, so I installed Billet Specialties lighted license plate frame in an attempt to solve the centering issue.
I scooted the assembly up and moved it over to center it so I was happy with the outcome.
By going down this path I was able to come up with a reasonable solution.

Funny how the trunk lids from FFR have had issues, one way or another, for years, and years. Perky butt, license plate fitting, and now this..:( I wonder if other replica manufactures have had this much fun with them..

I was reminded of the perky butt on my Mk3.1 the other day, when a friend who's not that familiar with the car, asked if someone rear ended me..:p

I have nipped that problem in the (bud, butt) (never sure on that one). Starting about a year ago I just fill the latch hole and drill a new one after its painted with a straight stripe.

I'll save you the hassle. I just e-mailed Dave C. and asked him to send me the new trunk lid with no holes drilled. See... I'm saving you time and I haven't even brought my car to you yet. :D
