View Full Version : Gas Tank Filler Sag and Side Pipe Spacing

I wanted to get some feedback from the forum on a couple things. First is the filler pipe. I installed it like the manual said and it sat there upright ever since. I put fuel in it last week (also it's been really humid) and now it droops down to the tire. I know fuel can make rubber softer but I don't remember seeing anyone else's filler tied off after first start. I put 4 gallons in the tank because I wanted to see if the fuel sender worked (it did). Please take a look and tell me if anything immediately jumps out as wrong or do I just need to tie it off. No gas leaks from the fitting.

The other thing is my side pipes. The passenger side seems closer to the frame (by seems I mean it's a 1/4 closer) than the driver. Question, is it an issue and can I fix it with a thicker gasket or should I not worry about it?
**Actually now that I'm looking at the pics side by side my tips line up on the rear wheels in about the same spot.

The filler just does that when go carting. I tied mine to stay vertical. The side pipes do frequently need some adjustment by way of wedges. I think Breeze Automotive (https://www.breezeautomotive.com/?s=Wedge&post_type=product) is where I got mine.

X2 to tie the filler. Do whatever you can to keep it stable. You really don't want to damage that inlet gasket. Don't try to align the pipes until you have the body on. You'll align them to the final position of the body. Which may or may not be the same as the chassis. Most likely it will not. Way too soon for wedges, etc.

I used a ratchet strap tied to my trunk hinge. As mentioned, don't worry about the side pipe alignment until body is on. Consider making some turnbuckle adjustable hangers for the J pipes. They are known to crack over time without support. I made my own but dark water customs has them as well. I think I saved maybe$15 making them myself, but could be even cheaper if you have some spare parts laying around.151050

As usual edwardb is giving sage advice!! I am in the fitting stage and my pipe alignment is different when the body goes on. I bought the wedges but I think I should have waited until the body is finally set fore/aft/right/left.I have a box of stuff I bought too early thinking I would need it or go a certain direction but went another way.

It is difficult to get the side pipes perfectly aligned and the same distance on both sides. I had to use multiple wedges on the passenger side and had to install a turnbuckle arrangement on the driver’s j-pipe, as above, to keep the side pipe in the correct position. Working well so far.

No point in getting too concerned with the pipes until the body is adjusted and in it’s final position which will occur during the bodywork phase.
