Working on fitting doors using both the hinges and "pull it out on the drivers side, push it in the passenger side". I have measured the body to death and it is centered. My question is when pulling out the body on the drivers side there is hardly any of the square tube left to fasten the body underneath the door. Is it typically that close? Thanks in advance.

Try patting your head and rubbing your belly while pulling it out and pushing it in. If that doesn't work, maybe adding a tab like my body guy had to do.

What reference points have you used to centre the body? Something isn’t right because you should have good overlap with the body rocker curl under on both sides.

When I fitted my body and doors, I was seeing the same thing you are describing. However, when Jeff Kleiner finished fitting the body, the driver's side was pushed in quite a bit more at the front that I had it. Use the splash panels as a guide, not the door. Once the body fits properly to the splash panels, go back and try to fit the door. That's my novice advice, so take it with a grain of salt.

Body centers by measuring from the front wheel well lip to the coil over tower, not the hood opening and tubing around the engine bay. Driver’s side push it in as far as possible forward of the door and pull it out 1/2” to 3/4” ahead of the rear wheel. Passenger side pushes in front and rear. Fine tune in or out as needed but most of the adjustment is via the hinges. On the driver’s side add a nice fat 3/8” flat washer to the lower front door stud before installing the door onto the hinge...when you crank the 4 bolts down it’ll put some twist into it which helps.

EDIT after seeing Papa Dave's comment: I don't mess with splash panels until the very last after everything else has been mocked up and then I adjust/modify them as needed to fit the body rather than the other way around.

Good luck!

Jeff

I certainly am doing something wrong, my splash panels have never change the fit of the body. As flimsy as they are, I don't see how they could. I beat them with a MFH till they fit the body, not the other way around.

Really more of a gauge on where the body is since after Jeff fit mine, the two front splash panels land the same place on both sides of the body relative to the wheel openings. Before Jeff touched it, the driver's side panel was in a completely different spot against the body -- a couple of inches further from the wheel opening.
