View Full Version : Protect holes in chassis for oxidation?

Did a bunch of hunting on the forums, no dice. Does anyone use por15 or similar on the holes we put in the chassis for mounting panels? Worried about oxidation, but I have a tendency to over-worry.
Thanks!

Yes, you are over thinking it.
But this is your build. Do what you wish!

I would. A Q-tip and any paint the color of your choice

You’re over-worrying but like Callahan said make yourself happy :)

JPT, that's what I do.
Permatex #2 on all the fastener threads, also for corrosion. A marine practice for salt water, in my case salted roads.

I had a similar question as well and this is how I ended up (or rather am currently) doing things:
- For all rivet holes for the panels I am relying on having the silicone there for some semblance of sealing. I figure anything above the 4" tubes should probably be pretty good anyways as it is not directly exposed to the road on the underside of the car.
- For the mounting points for the brake and gas lines on the 4" tubes (which I consider to be the most vulnerable). I drilled and tapped the mounting locations and just put a bunch of Blue Loctite on the fasteners - which were 316 stainless. That way at least there should be some "sealing" going on at the threads to keep moisture out of the tubes and the fasteners themselves should resist corrosion.
Not fool proof - but I decided it was enough to allow me to stop worrying about it. I had considered putting thread sealer instead of Loctite but decided against it. No particular reasons just decided I was more concerned about the bolts backing out than the thoroughness of the sealing.

I'm wondering, are you guys that are worried about this "oxidation" (or rust) powder-coating the inside of the chassis tubes? And are you fishing out the metal debris, from drilling the holes in the tubes, out of there? Just some random thoughts..................

One of those 'whats the silliest thing I can think of' moments.

When I built back in 2002 it was suggested to use silicone sealant with the panels and rivets, so that's what I did. After 19 year, no rust issues (POR15 chassis). To get the debris just tilt the front of the chassis 45 degrees and blow them out from the back of the 4" tubes - just kidding ;), I never worried about the debris. I suspect after this long with forward acceleration they are all taken care of.

A metallurgist friend of mine said that coating fasteners of dissimilar metals in silicone sealer/caulk can reduce galvanic reactions. Also mentioned that it was probably not worth the effort on our cars.
