View Full Version : Sun Visors Also Good for Deflecting Wind?

For those who have sun visors, are they also good at deflecting wind similar to the wing windows?
I've read up on all the installation issues (screws too long, cracked windshields, etc.), which seem to be a valid reason to avoid them, but less wind buffeting to take my hat off on the freeway (even when reversed) would be welcome - ha! ;)

Not really. I had them on one of my cars, but not on my current car. The hat test actual is better without.

Yes, pushes the air further over your head. But it will still roll over and down your back.
In the past I've had wind wings and visors, wouldn't be without them.

Wings make a bit of a difference. I haven't noticed any real change with the visors.

I can't say whether they help or not. I take my visors and wings off when I'm going on track but then I'm wearing a helmet and they're always back on when I'm on the street so no direct comparison. As far as the screws being too long and all that...if you use my alternate method for installing them you don't have to be concerned with that possibility. Here's how:
Use square 6-32 nuts in the top channel which can be inserted through the wide gap in the center. Install the tabs as shown here:

Put your visors on like this and use a piece of black vacuum hose or screen spline to fill the channel and hide the hardware.

Easy peasy and no risk of a tap or the visor screws contacting the glass.
Cheers,
Jeff

It depends on how tall you are and your seating position. For me, they kick the wind up so it is not hitting the top of my head.

Appreciate the install tips with pics - much appreciated Jeff! :D

I'm 6 foot and like to sit all the way back so I'm not sure if there will be measurable benefits to wind turbulence. I guess it's more of a styling/functional decision than anything else...so...perhaps I should ask the boss (my wife) what she thinks - LOL. :p

I have visors and wind wings. I'm 5' 10" and have the Breeze seat mounts as well as a heated/ventilated seat liner which adds ~1" rise to the seat. The visors deflect the wind well. I always wear a hat to keep the sun off my head and I've never had one come off in 12 years of driving, even above 80 mph.

I have been patiently waiting on buying the visors on the FFR website but like a lot of things it is sold out. Awesome solution Jeff!!!! Once again making things easier for everyone. Appreciate the info and pics.

I’m a pretty tall guy...all I use them for is wind deflection.

I'm 6"3" and the wind with sun visors was actually more likely to have my hat blown away; especially when trucks going the opposite direction pass by.

Agreed, thus giving me some time to gather some thoughts and opinions from others - in addition to receiving some very helpful tips along the way.

So question for the hive mind....... If you had the choice would you go wind wings over visor for keeping the tornado vortex at bay in the cockpit?

Same except only 6 years in the car. Have never really used them as sun visors. Baseball hat & sunglasses cover that

Thanks rich grsc. I was able to get the wings before they sold out and have had my eye on the visors. Appreciate the info.

I'm 6'2" and my head sticks well above the edge of the windshield unless I hunker down a bit. I haven't lost a hat yet, but it's been close several times, and I wear a tight fitting ball cap when driving. Plus, I live in west Texas where the wind is always blowing, adding to the buffeting. I can't say the visors make a difference as to wind, but I have found them helpful with the sun on multiple occasions when driving west in the evening as the sun gets lower.
I have both. I believe they both help. I have the visors tipped up and the wings out a bit. I have noticed a difference on "side" wind by changing how far out the wings are. It's still important to find a hat that fits well; otherwise it's gone with the first passing truck!

Complements on your tip Jeff. I used it to attach my visors 18 months or so back and they are working great.

I have my visors set up similar to Jeff's setup but with the clips in the normal spot but pointe up like Jeff has his. It absolutely makes a difference at highway speeds. I can feel the wind difference if I press them more vertical at speed.
Go with both if you are a tall guy for sure, IMO.

If I had to choose. Same for me. Wind wings.
Wind wings along with one of these sun visors.

I have the visors and wind wings. Once adjusted they do a decent job, but there's room for improvement. It's enough to mess with my hat a little when driving, but I noticed something with a more modern SL roadster I own that may help. The SL has a powered wind screen behind the cockpit made of a see-through synthetic mesh material. When raised it really balances the wind very nicely. Almost like riding in a pocket of air, and the AC functions much better also. With this in mind, I wonder if using a similar approach by adding a screen or head rest within the hoops behind your head would help? Just a thought.

Another factor is the seats in the car! High backed seats seem to reduce the wind buffeting compared to the typical low backed style. It’s kind of like a wind screen behind the seats that maintains that “air bubble” instead of dumping into the cockpit.

They work for me.
They also deflect the bugs up, and over. Beats having a wasp stuck in your hair at 70 mph..:)

Rich, your head doesn't stick up over the windscreen. I'm 6'2 and without the sunscreens my forehead feels like it is vibrating for some time after I get out of the car. Even on short trips. I wouldn't go without them. Like others have mentioned, it's all about what make YOU comfortable in these cars. Everyone has different requirements.

At 5' 10", my head is a little above the top edge of the windshield, so the visors are effective at directing the air over my head and hat.

Might as well pipe in here as well...I'm 5, 10" and being extremely deficient in the hair department I always wear a ball cap. My roadster has wind wings and visors. I believe the wind wings make more of a difference but the visors also help by moving the air flow just above my head. Only had one instance where my ball cap came off and that was a speed run well into the license suspension range. Use Kleiner's mod to install them and you never have to worry about putting tension on the glass.
My 2 cents
