Please tell us more about the cars build and pictures help. The master cylinder could be one of several parts. Many cars from the mkll time were built with using a donor car so 87-93 Mustang was common. Does your car have drum back brakes? or power brakes? Do you have coil overs on the back or are there Mustang shocks and springs?

Giving a photo of the master cylinder and also the rear brakes would be helpful because there are several possibilities. Not sure what you mean by "one of the rear axle rebound cables is on the way out". Can you explain for us?

Cheers,
Jeff

I think he is talking about the axle travel limit straps.

A Jeep master cylinder was popular back then.

The car is not a Donor build , The M/C has a bore of 7/8" and the #'s that are stamped are R8 C 428m and casting are DB8C-2156 , I am talking about the axel travel limit straps !

Never said it was a donor build. Many bought new Jeep master cylinders, as did I, and yours looks just like it.

Your photo shows a Jeep master cylinder which was sometimes used in the early Mk1 and Mk2 days.

1984 Jeep Cherokee:
NAPA #NMC P2447, manual brakes 15/16" bore with 7/16-24 and 9/16-18 threads on the ports
NAPA #NMC P2960, power brakes 15/16" bore with 1/2-20 and 7/16-24 threads on the ports

Select the one that matches your lines.

The axle limit straps are truck tailgate replacement straps. Measure the length and match it up at the parts store or online.

Yep, Jeff is correct, thats a Jeep MC. You can also use a MC from a 1994-95 Mustang , it too has a 15/16" bore.

I think I wrote it has a 7/8" bore in post #6 , And the author of post #7 Read post #2 , And thanks Jeff on the strap info , Ed

I have a MKII with a Jeep MC. My records have this - 1984 Jeep Cherokee, Manual brakes, 15/16" bore, with pushrod. Most places that have it use a variation of part number 101896, like 10-1896 or 1 01896, etc.

Just a heads up a 100lbs of foot pressure at the m/c a 15/16 bore makes about 142lbs pressure and a 7/8 bore makes 166 lbs , Ed

Exactly. So driving the car as is, and thinking about the MC, you may have an opportunity to reduce the pedal effort some if needed by trying to find an 11/16 MC.
