Where I live the bars seldom close so we usually end up at Waffle House when the evening is over which is usually when the Sun starts to rise.

All true from my experience. Haven't been to a WH in a while but used to when I travelled the south, drawn to them, kinda like flies to fly paper. Always seemed to run the AC full blast even in the cooler months, 'bout froze me out. I think that was part of the plan to keep the patrons moving through and not lingering.

I do like waffle house but the closest one to me it about 50 miles away. In Michigan our greasy spoon is coney island. Same rules apply but they are still great.

I love waffle house, I have three of them within 15 miles of me and all of them are great. Lets face it, it's just quick, fast, half way good breakfast food. (smothered, and covered) Never been to one at three in the morning. It might be a different animal at that time of the day.
I don't think they go further north than STL. That's where I would find them. I get the whole "evening over" thing. When I had a band in the late 70's (in CT), we'd stop at Bess Eaton Donuts. They always had an interesting group of customers at 3 AM. I wonder if they're still around (the donut shop, that is...).

Never been to a Waffle House... The only thing experience I have with it comes from "Tin Cup"!

Ah nope. Here is one reason, I had fresh waffles with cherries on top in Antwerp over a Christmas visit and nothing will compare. Plus I don’t eat that kind of food for breaky to be honest.

Waffle House is best when you stop by on your way home from the French Quarter (New Orleans) at 4:00-5:00 AM.
