Hey Everyone,

Well its time for me to order my TKO 500 trans. Never paid any attention besides checking pricing every once in a while. Well load behold i go to JEG which had the best price and it doesn't even come up. They now have a new TKX model.

Checked other places and they show discontinued.

Price is comparable. Speedway has it for a couple hundred more.

Are all of the mounting points the same as the TKO 500. I already have my clutch, and bell housing on the 289.

TKO500/600 discontinued some months ago. Replaced by the TKX. Improved in multiple ways. Other than costing more (no surprise) I'd consider yourself lucky. You're getting a nice upgrade. It has a narrower profile but mounting dimensions and locations all the same.

The bell housing needs to be a tremec aluminum or for the t600/TKX or the quicktime 6060. The TKX has a 26 spline input you may need to change the clutch disc.

The TKX appears to be available with a 10 or 26 spline input shaft. TKX 10 spline transmission (https://fortesparts.com/product/__trashed-5/)

Don't overthink it guys. By far the most common TKO for our builds was the TKO600 TCET5008: Ford, Torque capacity: 600 lbs/ft, Input shaft spline count: 26, Output shaft spline count: 31, 1st gear: 2.87, 2nd gear: 1.89, 3rd gear: 1.28, 4th gear: 1, 5th gear: 0.64. Reverse 2.56

The TCET17765 TKX is essentially the same: Ford, Torque capacity: 600 lbs/ft, Input shaft spline count: 26, Output shaft spline count: 31, 1st gear: 2.87, 2nd gear: 1.89, 3rd gear: 1.28, 4th gear: 1, 5th gear: 0.68. Reverse 2.56

Dimensions, bell housings, flywheel, clutch, driveshaft slip joint, all the same between the two. Lots of web information and YouTube videos. This probably is the best comparison I've seen: https://americanpowertrain.com/tko-vs-tkx/

I know some used the "road race" version of the TKO with the .82 5th gear. I tried it in one build and wasn't for me. But some have reasons. There's a TKX version similar to that one too.

Thankyou, that's a relief about the mounting points!!!

Yes, they do have the 10 spline. Part number TCET18086. Gonna order it. Hope the Shifter goes through that pre cut hole from FFR.

I also have the TKX trans TCET17765 and the QuickTime RM-6060 bellhousing with a Hays 92-2100 clutch kit for my sb 427. But after assembly I have way too much play like the pivot ball needs to be adjusted higher or is it taller…further towards the engine. Does anyone know the length it should be. Or where to measure from?

I will also be ordering a TKX for my coupe build, do you guys know what shift location is required?

I ordered a TKX from Factory Five Engines, a.k.a. Blueprint Engines, a.k.a. Marshall Engines. SBF in the Coupe. At the time of my order, the mid-shift option was not available, so I opted for the TKO600 with that option, which was available.

The mid-shift option avoids cutting out one of the cross members in the top of the tunnel. It also involves thinking about what kind of shifter you might like to use, as at a minimum, you will have to flip around the FFR provided shifter and tap a new hole for mounting to the tranny post (at an angle that suits your reach), and maybe shorten the handle, which involves cutting some threads for the knob. In my most recent post re: my build, you'll see the result of shifting, tapping and shortening. Note, the midshift option is at least a couple hundred bucks

26 spline is significantly stronger than 10. Also note that version has a 3.27 first gear and .72 fifth. Depending on your rear axle ratio that may be less than ideal. I’m using a TKX with those ratios along with a 3.08 rear in a Coupe build for a customer but if you are combining it with a 3.55 or lower you might find that those ratios are a little short.
