View Full Version : Over-riders - Front Hoop install

I am trying to use a set of over-riders (bumperettes) and the hoop on the front of my car. The set is from a MK3. It appears the mounting plates are welded in square, so there is little to no tilt in the bumper. That part lines up OK. When I try to mount the hoop, I notice if the mounting tabs align with the back of the bumpers, then the hoop angle doesn't match that of the nose. If I space the hoop equally, top and bottom, then the mounting bracket skews on the bumper sides.

Not casting stones, but Quality Control was clearly on a break when they made this set. I've tried tweaking the tabs as much as I can to get them to align with the bumpers, and it just isn't going to happen. At least, not until I learn the magic curse words.

Has anyone else experienced this? How did you get everything to line up? Any pictures of the connection between the hoop and the bumper would really be helpful

Thanks

Paul

Not sure what method you used to attach the front of the body. I used the split tube method and made my own tubes so the back of the over riders paralleled the radiator opening in the nose. The bumper was then mounted with the back edge of the mounting flange flush with the back edge of the over riders.
Installing the complete assembly was impossible. I had to enlarge the holes through the body and loosely install the over riders first. Then put the bumper hoop in place and gradually tighten things up.
On the road right now and don’t have access to all the pictures from the build. Here are a couple that might help.

PS. Uttering a few bad words, walking away and coming back later was required a couple of times.

I didn't mount mine, the painter did, but I can tell it wasn't straight forward just by the way one over-rider doesn't match the hoop flange that well.

I'm wondering about the rear bumper alignment. I don't want to take away from your question, but I'd like to know if anybody has some input on how to fix a tilted rear bumper? It doesn't look like there is much that can be done, though it is a small tilt I need fixed.

Not quite understanding the problem. Is the bumper tilted side to side or vertically? If it is side to side, and the over riders are even, then enlarge the holes through the bumper mounts so you can take out the tilt. If it is vertically then either shorten the long tubes or put a washer the correct thickness between the bumper and the short tubes.

I have the over-riders and hoop from FFR for my MK4. The rear over-riders are straight but the fronts have the slant. After installing the over-riders, the hoop didn't fit. I contacted FF but never received a response. The hoop mounting tabs gave me the correct angle to align with the nose, but was too wide. I ended up cutting the hoop and removing an inch of material on the upper tube and rewelding. I did have to flex the bolt tabs out a little.

NOTE: The first pic doesn't show the slant, but they are.

It’s side to side. Enlarging the holes is what I was thinking but the sleeves are already very close to the horizontal bars. I’ll see what I can do.

Paul, I found my front hoop and I'm not using it. I put it in the trunk and you can have it next time we meet up or if you want to come pick it up earlier.

I also thought that only the MK3 over-riders for the rear, have the plates welded in straight? Mix-up when ordered perhaps?
I know things may have changed on the MK4's, but on my MK3.1.the sleeve length, for both upper, and lower bolts, had a lot to do with getting the angle of the over-riders, (and hoop) matched with the bodies rad opening.
