Ok fellas. I finished carpeting the cockpit and I am almost done in the trunk. Turned out very nicely if I say so myself :)
I went ahead and carpeted over my drop battery mod and drop trunk mod and plan on cutting out the battery opening with a guide and box blade but I would like to have the carpet lip over the drop trunk mod. So I planned on an "x" pattern cut to open up the trunk and then gluing down the edges with a final matte black rattle can spray for the drop trunk floor.
Does this sound reasonable or would you recommend a d different approach. I guess I could try to hunt down a piece of carpet that would match and glue that into the floor but not sure what type of carpet they use or the dye. Your comments are appreciated :)
Picture for your time..... My trunk with the drop battery box and drop trunk hidden by the carpet and the obligatory cockpit shot.

That's how I do mine. X-cut from corner to corner. Then fold down and trim at the bottom. Then triangular pieces to fill in the corners. If you're carefull and make clean cuts, the edges mostly disappear. You can just see the added piece in the top RH corner of this picture during my #8674 build. I didn't cut out the cross pieces like some do. But still fits around those OK. My kit didn't come with trunk carpet, so I bought a few yards of matching carpet from Factory Five. Others have used many different products, like outdoor carpet, boat carpet, etc. Personally I'd put something in there beside just painting it black. Keep whatever you have in there from rattling around.

Thank you edwardb!!! I appreciate your response. Good point about stuff rattling around. I am sure I could find something that matches the carpet.

I grabbed some outdoor carpet from the local Lowes and cut pieces for my drop trunk. I used instabind around the cut trunk carpet for a more finished look.

Carpet store should have something that matches the F5 stuff. It was pretty cheap. I have a lot left over from when I did mine. I can send you some if you need it.

I have quite a bit of instabind left over that you're welcome to. Just need black hot glue sticks.

So, a question. Why not leave the drop uncarpeted, and make a fold up top for it instead, and carpet that?

Things will rattle around if not carpeted. I did mine a little different. I made a removable carpet mat for the drop-trunk floor and the right side to cover access to the fuel level sender and the in-tank fuel pump access.

x2. didn't do the side that way, but the bottom, yes. Hope to never need to get to the tank, but it will be easier this way.
Carpet looks great, nice job on the install. Good idea doing it how Edwardb recommended, looks cleaner that way IMO. I ended up using some 3/4" L channel to finish off the edges but doing it over I would have cut it like you are doing so it just laid down on the edges with the seam in the bottom of the drop trunk. I will say after driving the car to numerous car shows nobody ever asks to see the trunk so don't geek out too much on it!:D

FFR sells 72" carpet blanks for $26.5. I just ordered some to fill in my cubby and the drop trunk. It's the exact same stuff

Don't forget about your access panels. I also have the ffmetal battery box. The access panels made it easier for me to plan the seams.

I also wrapped the 3/4" bars with carpet. I didn't want something, like my helmet, vibrating on metal.

Will do CD. Great idea about using the panel for a template to cut the carpe for my battery drop box.

Great point Fman. I guess the trunk is not the prime objective of these cars LOL!

Thank you everyone for your awesome comments. I spoke with Dan at FFR and they sell carpet by the yard so I will grab some of that and finish off the bottom. I plan on cutting access ports for the fuel sender and fuel pick up panels. I placed rivnuts for those panels and the powder coated the panels a matte black to match the frame. Hopefully that will work OK in conjunction with the carpet rather than carpeting over the access panels.

I did the same. Sprayed the access panel covers with truck bed line and attached to the trunk aluminum with rivnuts
