View Full Version : How early can I get the body painted?

I never know if I should do a deeper search or post a question that potentially has been asked before. I couldn't find anything quickly this time so I'm gonna go ahead and ask.

I got the body cutout option, does that mean I can send the body to get painted as soon as I receive my kit? If not, what would be the stage that I would be able to do so?

Thanks in advance!

Great question. I suspect it needs to be completed mocked up before you paint, but lets see what others post.

Have you looked at the body prep videos posted here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnJdjMKDC_g&list=PLWvfrZxPoPnbmHRjXTlVS-CVcPoK4x6lB

They seem to imply you should do some body prep before even removing it. The body cut out option appears to be a roughed out cut out.

Be interested to see what others have done also regarding paint prep and timing.

Depends on the painter. Some have the capability to do the body without the chassis some don't. I sent mine in pretty early, about 4 months after I got it, due to known backlogs with the painter I was using.

The Jeffs will give you a better idea of when, but I know for certain there is trimming of the body after it's at go cart stage, like around the windshield holes and side pipe openings.

My first cobra from FFR back in 97, FFR had my body painted and striped for pickup with the kit. I don't know what body shop they used back then but they knew exactly what to do and everything fit. All for a cost of $4000.

Wow that was a bargain.

The holes are close but need to be massaged . The doors need to be mounted with the body in place on the chassis so they can be trimmed ,tweeked and backfilled to match the body. The hood and decklid can be trimmed on the buck. I recommend you wait till you are almost done with the build so you don't have a painted body laying around the shop...da Bat

Absolutely mock up the car with gaps for doors, truck and hood. I got the body cut outs and things still needed massaging. The side vents and the exhaust cut out were way off to the point fiber glass needed to be added and recut. Don't get it painted only to find out there is grinding to be done.

I have taken body's directly to the body shop from FFR. This allows the body shop to do the majority of the work while you work on the chassis. The body shop is able to get the body into the first coat of primer filling the seams and straightening the body etc. Once it is in the first coat of primer I pick it, fit the doors, hood trunk, windshield, etc etc, prior to final body work and paint. Once I have it all fitted I take it back and have them complete the rest of the work.

All work on the body(except for fitting) is done off the chassis.
