Hi all, I did some research on this but I'm having trouble making heads or tails of it. I stopped by Ford parts today and tried to buy orange coolant per many recommendations on this forum. The salesperson there, who has steered me wrong in the past, said they discontinued orange and yellow is replacing it. Searching tonight I can still find orange available online but also a lot of chatter about yellow being the new thing. I'm curious what the coolant experts here think of all this.
I bought the yellow concentrate so I'll have to dilute. Any objections to yellow concentrate? Thanks in advance.

Seems yellow is the new orange..:p
The key factor is not to mix the two types together. You don't want to use a different one for top ups for instance. Always use the same product. If you had used orange coolant previously, and it was not completely flushed out, then orange would be better to stick with.
But if this is your first rad fill, either one will be fine. Since yellow is the main one Ford will be supplying in the future, your probably better off using it from the get go.

If you have a sight glass or tube on the side of your overflow tank, the yellow is hard to see. I prefer red for that reason.

Are you talking about Dex-cool or G-05 type?

Just walk into any autoparts store, or even Wally World and buy Dex-Cool. It's what Ford used to use, just put in a Ford jug and charge 50% more. The Yellow is a universal coolant which is compatible with the orange.
Am I the only one that still uses the old green Prestone stuff that's $8 a gallon?

Yep, I guess so:rolleyes:. Dex-Cool was created to provide superior protection for aluminum, prevents micro bubbles forming on the aluminum. Green is just fine if you have an all iron block and heads
Add another task to the list .... coolant flush and refill with Dex-Cool. This forum never stops helping me spend time and money. :p

I still use green. I change it every other year.

I recommend don't get too wrapped up in brand/type of coolant. They all work and 98% of them are fine w/ aluminum heads because even US manufactured engines have a lot of aluminum in them. 20yrs ago it was a little more of a concern because there weren't a lot of US aluminum engines being made. I happened to use red coolant because I worked at a Lexus dealer and the coolant there was red.

There can be an issue with mixing Dex-cool and older style green, so a complete flush is required. Also, can dex-cool be mixed with G-05?

Yes, a complete flush is necessary to use Dex-Cool, or any red coolant. I don't know about G-05? Just do a quick Google search and you'll have the answer

I used PEAK dex-cool orange in my gen 2 coyote. $11 gallon works great, no mixing, no overpriced motorcraft stuff.

I assume Dex-Cool is Dex-Cool regardless of the packaging? I see Dex-Cool for GM at my local wallyworld -- same stuff?

yes
In my street vehicles, and tractors I use what the manufacturer recommends. In my race cars I use the good old propylene glycol based inorganic acid formula (IAT) -- the green stuff. Yes, you have to change it every two years under normal use. It has worked for me for more than a half-century and contrary to what some believe, works just fine with aluminum.
Here's some info to help you understand antifreeze types. When you start looking into coolants and the various colors that tend to confuse consumers, you'll start to see that color alone is not such a great indicator of what coolant you have. https://chem-group.com/antifreeze-the-ultimate-guide/

I have a 2018 GT350 so I was following the whole Yellow is the new Orange thing. Here is the Motorcraft bulletin on this topic. You'll note that it IS backward compatible with Orange. I went out and bought a gallon of Orange anyway just to have because the coolant reservoure in my car is clear and mounted front and center. And I like orange. hehehe
Backward Compatibility/Use of Motorcraft® Yellow Antifreeze/Coolant with/in place of Motorcraft® Orange Antifreeze/Coolant
Ford Engineering has approved the use of yellow-colored Motorcraft® Yellow Antifreeze/Coolant (Ford specifications WSS-M97B57-A1 and WSS-M97B57-A2) to service all Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles factory-filled with the following antifreeze/coolant: • Orange-colored Motorcraft® Orange Antifreeze/Coolant (Ford specifications WSS-M97B44-D and WSS-M97B44-D2)
Topping off, Draining and Refilling: • Motorcraft® Yellow Antifreeze/Coolant can be used to top-off or entirely replace (drain and refill) antifreeze/coolant in vehicles factory-filled with Motorcraft® Orange Antifreeze/Coolant. Flushing: • Flushing the cooling system is not required prior to entirely replacing (draining and refilling) Motorcraft® Orange Antifreeze/Coolant with Motorcraft® Yellow Antifreeze/Coolant if the cooling system is not contaminated.
