I am trying to install the new fly wheel on a gen 3 coyote. How do I remove the thrust bearing from the old fly wheel? I removed the retainer clip. Do I just hit with a socket and hammer? If so which direction do i hit it?

Have you tried the Bread & Bolt Method yet?

If you have a tight-fitting bolt & O-Ring(s) you can use the Grease Method too.

I learned these tricks when I was a helper/tool chaser at Ken's Racing Services when I was a kid.

I just used grease and a bolt, no O ring. Popped right out.

You're asking about the pilot bearing that comes already installed in the Gen 3 flywheel assembly? The flywheel that much be replaced? I wouldn't try to re-use it. New ones are < $25. Ford Performance M-7600-C. That's what I did. Installs in the end of the crankshaft (where it belongs :p).

Edward, Thanks again. Going to order a new one. Yes, the pilot bearing in the gen3 flywheel.

Im not familiar with the Gen 3 Coyote stuff , is that the pilot bearing that is pressed into the flywheel?

Yes. For the Gen 3, Ford went to a dual mass flywheel setup and the pilot bearing is in the flywheel. None of our usual transmission/bell housing combinations (TKO, TKX, T-56, etc.) work with that setup. So the dual mass flywheel has to be removed and replaced with a standard flywheel and a pilot bearing installed into the usual location on the end of the crankshaft. One of the charms of the Gen 3 Coyote.

That bread trick is too cool.

On my Gen1 the bread trick but with grease. The thing I found to make it even easier was to used a slightly tapered wooden dowel. I basically just made the right size it on a drill with sandpaper. As you cram it in there the wood makes a perfectly tight seal and the bearing popped right out.

You guys posting about using grease, bread, et al. maybe don't realize this is in a flywheel not the end of a crankshaft. I did the grease thing in a crankshaft on a SBF and agree it works. Pilot bearing popped right out. Just sprayed grease all over the garage. Probably my fault for not an exact fit. But all academic in this case. The stock dual mass Coyote Gen 3 flywheel is open on the backside. The picture below is the other side. Putting something in from the backside might drive it out. But short of an exact fit on the diameter, which might work, you'd probably be pushing on the inner race. Not good for a part you want to reuse. $25 for a new part is cheap insurance. Especially since it's a major teardown to replace.

So the pilot bearing now mounts in the flywheel, and it's a major teardown to replace it..sheesh... I thought Ford's motto was, Ford has a better idea...?

All I meant was replacing a pilot bearing requires removal of the trans. Same as any engine and not always a fun task in these cars. Sheesh back.

Bearing not bushing. If possible press on the outer race. If it is really tight, pressing on the inner race could just gut the outer race, and you still have to get it out.
The old rule of thumb is to press on the etched numer/letters.
Pressing a bearing in with the inner race can brinell the races, leading to failure.
