View Full Version : Dart 427 Electric fan turn on temperature
What temperature are you guys setting your fan temperature to come on at? I have a 180 T-stat and currently have my fan set to come on at 185 degrees. I feel like the fan is always running, was considering going up to 190. I do not want to create any cooling issues with going too high on the setting.
Any thoughts on this?
Thanks...

If you up the thermostat that won't change how often the fan runs just how hot the engine temperature will be. What will change how often it needs to run is your radiator. The radiator can only dissipate the amount of heat it's designed for. If you need more efficient cooling then a radiator with more surface area will do that, either bigger or with more coolant rows. There are websites that can tell you how efficient different types of radiators can be. Another variable for cooling is a shroud for your fan. A shroud (if you don't already have one) will make the fan more efficient at pulling air through all parts of the radiator.
Now back to your question, what thermostat should you run? That depends a little on your engine. The builder (or manufacturer) should have recommendations on what temperature that engine should run at. Part of that involves getting the oil to the right temperature for efficient flow and to remove condensed moisture from the oil.

Fan can be set to 200*
I think your thermostat is too cold for EFI. The preferred engine temp for EFI, seem to be 195*.
Should have been more clear on my post, not trying to up the T-stat temp just when the fan is turning on. Definitely not even considering going with a different cooling set up I have the FFR radiator, breeze shroud with an upgraded cooling fan and the car is running excellent right now - temps are between 185-195 degrees. I have been doing some research and it appears fan should be set to come on 10 degrees over the T-stat which in my case would be 190 with a 180 T-stat.
What temp does the Coyote fan come on at? I know Blue Print offers Sniper EFI just wondering what guys are setting there fan temps to come on at? Assuming the Sniper also allows you to change the temp the fan starts to turn on? Anyone know what temp t-stat BP installs with there Sniper setup?

Mine comes on at 180. Seems like it runs a lot but I'm OK with that. Temps run from 185-195 as well

Modern EFI engines are programmed to run hotter simply for better emissions. For a lot of cars, you can gain power by putting in a lower temp thermostat and reprogramming the computer for the lower temps.
For your 427, the thermostat should be completely open by 180*. Turning the fan on at 190*, and off at 185'ish* should work well. The hysteresis should be 3-5*.

You can of course change your 'fan on' temp but I am not sure I would. I see you are in Cali so probably a little warmer than us in southern Va, but I think as we get another month or so and temps climb, you will be glad to hear that fan running and watching your engine temp drop a little each time it comes on. Mine doesn't come on until 195 using the sensor, so I have a manual switch also. I find I am happier flipping that switch as soon as I am in slower traffic and then the engine stays at 180-185 vs 180-195-180-195 as the fan comes on and off.

Are you running Sniper EFI? or Carb?

Not so long ago (OK maybe long ago...), the cooling fans were driven by the engine, so when the engine was running, the fan was running. Unless the fan noise bothers you (can you really hear it over the exhaust?), I wouldn't worry about having it running! Your thermostat controls the minimum operating temperature of your engine.

Good point, I went with the 3000 CFM Flex a lite which is very quiet, I can't even hear it when the car is running... one of my concerns was impeding airflow while the car is driving when the fan is running. Maybe this is not an issue, driving at 50 mph with the fan turning would it reduce the airflow actually going through the radiator? I don't think the fan pushes air at 50 mph.. but maybe it does?

You are correct. After 45-50mph, the fan does nothing. I have one of my cars programmed to only run the fan at <2,500 rpm's. Anything below that is below 45mph.

I run this sending unit (on at 195 and off at 185) plumbed into the bottom of my Fortes de-gas tank, so its picking up the water temp going into the rad. Works great. Scott

I have the Holley Sniper on my baby 347. I set the fan turn on temp at 195 and fan off temp at 185. I also have the 180 stat. I can idle through most stoplights without the fan coming on. The temps will creep up toward 195 but will quickly cool off when I get moving. In Las Vegas summers, the fan will be on within seconds of coming to a stop since the ground temp is already about 140.
For the other 3 seasons, my setup seems to run well. I did not want the fan to be coming on any more often than necessary.
Forte assembled my combo as well. Other than emissions, I don't know why you would need a higher temp stat just because you have fuel injection. In my opinion, the Sniper is nothing but an electronically controlled carb.

I have my Coyote cooling fan set to come on at 93 C/ 200 F. Personally, I think a two stage fan is the best option for any engine. By the way, the gen 2 Coyote was a total mess when it came to the cooling fan on setting. Basically, it came on three minutes after start up and never shut off.
