Ordered my kit this AM mid October production date. Decided to go with Coyote and IRS but I did order the headers with cats. Its a $250 upgrade and the FF rep that called seemed to try to talk me out of them. His reason was primarily around the extra heat in the engine bay.
My reason for choosing the cats is to eliminate the smell. This car is replacing my 74 Corvette Convertible with sidepipes and no cats. The noise does not bother me but I don't like smelling like exhaust after a 1 hour cruise. Also don't like having to leave the garage door open for an hour to air it out after returning from my cruise.
Anyone have experience and hopefully some photos they can share?
This is the option I am referring to:
16792 - Headers: 5.0L Coyote stainless steel 4-port full length with catalytic converters.

Not on a Coyote but I have FFR supplied cats on my 331 and have never had heat from the cats cause any problems. On my car the cats are in the J pipes that bolt right to the end of the shorty headers. As you point out it is nice not to have the exhaust smell and they do take a little bit of the edge off the exhaust noise.

I've done two Coyote builds. A Gen 2 in a Roadster and a Gen 3 in a Gen 3 Coupe. Both with side pipes. Exhaust odor has never been a problem with either. I've literally never noticed it. We drove the Roadster for three seasons and now the Coupe is in its second season. My wife is very sensitive to things that smell, and she's never said anything either. Sure if you stick your face right by the exhaust exit you can smell something. Like any internal combustion engine. But normal use, never. The Coyote like most modern computer controlled EFI engines has a very controlled combustion burn. The cats are there for a reason to scrub emissions and pass legal standards. Some use cats because it is required for their local jurisdiction. Others because they do hush the sound a bit. But purely for smell I think you're overthinking it. Between the added cost and the heat issues, I personally don't think it's worth it. If you're anywhere close to SE Michigan, you're welcome to stop and take the sniff test. :p

Gen 1 Coyote in MkIV. You smell a lot of things in traffic and back roads, but the Coyote is not one of them.
The fuel injection, after tuning, burns so clean I doubt smell would be an issue even in the garage.
My Gen 1 had a decent tune from Ford and ran clean from the get/go. I got a Lund tune for performance and peace of mind. The Gen 3s require a tune right out of the box.

Wait are you guys trying to tell me the Coyote Gen 3 burns cleaner than my 74 SBC? :)
Allright I'm officially moving the cats to the 'maybe' column but I would still like to see photos and hear from anyone running them on a Coyote.

I agree with what edwardb and railroad said. I am running a Gen2 Coyote with log tube headers when stopped or driving I don't smell anything, but when I reverse up my driveway into my garage I do get a lingering exhaust smell. It goes away rather quickly and if I pull in forward I don't smell it. There is a smell in confined spaces, but not something that is obnoxious.

4000+ miles on my MK4 with Gen2 Coyote, no cats, and there is no smell either

I would agree that after the engine is warm you don't notice the smell, but on start up it will ruin my garage for hours. Maybe my nose is different than everyone else's but I won't even start it inside anymore. All cars do this when they're cold, (I don't know that cats would help here), but my Coyote is much worse and this is in a large garage. I too am considering the header cats (I'd like to find some used ones) but more so to tone down the exhaust note and be more environmentally friendly to our mountain air. I know Brian Grayson installed them on his Coyote, but for the life of my I can't find his build thread again. I have his email if you'd like to contact him for his impressions.

I ran CAT-J-pipes on my 4.6L DOHC engine in a MK4. No smell and no excessive heat issues either. The way FF positioned the CATS, they were not very close to the front of either footbox.
I also used Gas-N sides pipes, the combination had a great sound. Mellow enough to were you could have a conversation in the car, at least until you were going fast enough that the wind and road noise drowned out everything.
I do not think they were a big hit on HP either, car was dynoed with 299 at the rear wheels.

I have a gen 2 with cats. No issues with heat what so ever. I did it for smell(maybe a waste I don't know) and noise. I also run the Gas-N sides pipes

Any photos of the setup? Really curious how the hook up is with the sidepipes.
Interesting range of experiences w the coyote. I have a gen 1, and even after a tune I did not like the smell. Mainly when driving. BUT - i was in gel coat, without the doors sealed up, etc - so maybe more tramp air leakage?
I had more issue w the sound, so I ran under car exhaust. That eliminated both issues. (have to say my garage smells a tiny bit but not terrible when i get back from driving - so may have been the leakage issue)

Hi guys.
I'm hoping someone here can help me. I have a Gen 2 33 with a 2017 Coyote. I'm in Australia and they want me to put cats in but I cant see any way that I can get them in. I was talking to a coyote guy at the Mustang shop here and he said the engine would probably meet 1988 Australian emissions without the cats. Having said that he has never done an emissions test on an engine without cats. Has anyone here got any figures they can share with me? I have searched a fair bit, emailed Ford and I cannot find anything. I dont want to assemble this thing and find out afterwards that it doesn't comply and then have to work out how to get something in there with the floor in etc.
Thanks
Mick
