Wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone giving their input and instruction with multiple threads and discussion. I was nervous doing this mod due to the fact I had to drill and tap perfectly good parts but just like everyone else I had no problems and it came out great! I would definitely recommend doing this mod if you are looking for a bolt on option for a quick release steering wheel.

And one from the Coupe forum which I thought was interesting and did away with almost all of the fab work.

You're going to love having the removable wheel.
I keep my steering wheel in the house until I'm ready to go for a drive.
I've taken the wheel with me on a few occasions when I dropped by the store to pick up a few things.

------I am not sure my last message went through, so if ti did I apologize for the duplicate posting-----
I know this is an old post, but wanted to verify for the non Ron Thompson mod steering wheel hub, you used the NRG quick release as is and attached to the FFR steering wheel hub. Did you remove the horn and mill out the internals to make it fit? On the steering wheel you had to drill new bolt pattern to fit quick release hub.
Thanks
Bill

How did you remove the center of the NRG? I was thinking of taking it to someone that has a drill press or a mill. Not sure how hard the material is and if I can do it with a handheld drill. Edit: I see Bill asked a similar question. I should have refreshed the page before posting...

You have to remove the horn button, then you can trim the depth using a Dremel with a cutoff wheel. The metal is soft and cuts easily. Check my build thread post #66 (https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?40632-ATX-MKIV-9644-Coyote-Build-Thread-(Index-Post-1)&p=480475&viewfull=1#post480475) - lots of pictures with step by step.

I used :NRG Innovations SRK-400CF Carbon Fiber Thin Quick Release. I am pretty sure it is the same for the RT mod but not 100%. It has been a while since I did it. Like Darryl said metal is soft and a Dremel was used to cut down and then pulled the electronic bits out for the horn. I linked above to to some really good how to threads and Darryl has a good one too. Good luck.

Just got the black version of the NRG connector for Christmas. Can't wait to put it in. Always nice to hear somebody did it successfully. Your install looks great!
