Starting to look at getting the rear axle squared away, what have you done in your projects? Pictures would be helpful.
Thank you in advance.

Rustoleum 'Self Etching' primer followed by Rustoleum 'Hammered' paint in black or charcoal. Start at one end and by the time you get to the other end you may be able to start your second coat. I spray the next coat as soon as the first is tacky. Spray in increasingly heavier coats for the max 'hammered' effect.

CaptB, I too like POR15 for durability and use just POR primer if it is not exposed to (UV) sun. Their spray top coat is (was?) not solvent resistant. I did complain but got no resolution.
The local Ag big box store handles VanSickle spray (Lincoln NE.) at a premium price and basic colors only. It is fantastic, durable and high gloss.
For aluminum I use KBS Clear Diamond Finish. It goes on like POR and is tough. I have been researching zinc chromate for aluminum panels.
BTW Frankeeski's watts link is very nice.

Since I had mine stripped for a rebuild and some welding, I had it powdercoated black. (Sorry, no photos of the finished unit)

POR15 is awesome - just don't get it on anything else! it's like antiseize compound but black! it will ruin clothing, blacken your skin
and if you're not careful, you'll spill it on your garage computer mouse and have to get a new one (ask me how I know) :)

Here is another vote for POR15. It's performed well for me. As said, do not get it on anything you don't want black, it has to wear off, there is no solvent to remove it. Make sure to do it with plenty of ventilation, the fumes are nasty. It doesn't take much. I saw somewhere you could purchase a six pack of 1/2 pints. That will be the way I go next time. Once you open the container the lifetime of reuse goes away quick. I have had success with saran wrap under the lid for a tighter seal. That can lasted another 6 months after the first opening.
