View Full Version : Upper radiator hose popping off

Need some collective wisdom from the forum here.
We have had our radiator hose come off three separate times. First time the lower radiator hose came off at the engine. Second two times the upper hose has come off at the engine. See the pic below for where it's coming off.
Seems to happen after about 10 minutes of running. Water temp never reads over 150. Fan is not turning on. The last time right after we shut the engine down there was a gurgling sound I've not heard before almost like the engine burping.

Keep in mind we are total noobs and no advice is too simple. Appreciate any wisdom you can share.

Is there a bead on that water neck? If it's chrome, you might want to sand down the finish to give it some grip.
edit: after looking closer, there IS no bead on your waterneck. replace it with one like Fman showed below w/ a lip along the edge for the hose clamp to hold against.
I used these T-bolt clamps, IMO they are much better than worm style. If you want to use this setup you will need two different clamps, the 2789 and 2790. I used 4 packs of the 2789 and one pack of the 2790. The 2790 is a larger clamp that is needed for the lower water pump port. All the other fittings will take the 2789 clamps.

I also went with this water neck: I had a lot of issues with the cheaper chrome looking neck.

The gurgling sound is more than likely air being sucked into your cooling system. Make sure the overflow never goes dry. I would also recommend this simple setup, it works and will burp all the air out of your system. Another tip was to remove one of the manifold plugs and top off coolant into the intake manifold before starting. Everytime you remove a hose this process starts from zero again and you have to go back and remove all the air.

A gurgling sound followed by a geyser out the filler or blowing hoses off is a sign of trapped air or a blown head gasket. Get a test kit for checking your coolant for products of combustion from your local auto supply store. If it passes that test. Try parking the car facing uphill or the front raised on ramps. Leave the rad cap off and start the engine. The water pump will displace a little coolant when it starts turning so it could puke about a cup. While the engine warms add coolant to keep it full and watch for bubbles at the filler. Throw a towel over the filler before you shut the engine down.

You might want to check the radiator cap- we found it wasn’t long enough to seal the filler neck and it kept blowing water out the overflow pipe.

Get rid of the chrome neck, and use the proper hose. That looks like a collection of a bunch of mix and match hoses.

You can't go wrong wit Boig Pipes, a little pricy but worth every penny.

I agree on both statements. Fewer connections mean fewer opportunities for leaks. Boig's Cooltubes are fantastic. Look at the integrated filler version to reduce the number of connections.

Get a new housing from LMR. The chrome ones are pretty... that’s about it.

I have to agree with everyone else. Get rid of that gooseneck and get one with a bead. Chrome is terrible where something has to grip.
I also agree with Boig pipes. Not to pile on.....But every connection is a chance for a leak. All of those pieces and clamps, and especially the flex hose are asking for trouble. They are also, let's say......not aesthetically pleasing.

[Just a guess, but is your thermostat installed backward? Second guess, chrome neck perhaps has no rib to hold hose on?
