View Full Version : Rear brake caliper hitting disc ... Anniversary kit brakes

I seem to be nothing but problems - my apologies.

Anniversary kit - supplied 13 inch rear brakes.

When bolting caliper to the supplied brackets that are bolted to the ends of the supplied Moser rear axle, the PS caliper hits the disc on the outside of the disc when the caliper mounting bolt is fully tightened, enough such that the disc no longer turns.

DS is "OK" - no interference when the caliper mounting bolts are fully tightened

Hope the pictures are properly attached (1st time doing pics on this Forum)

Calipers are on the correct sides - e.g. ignoring the RH / LH caliper markings and ensuring the bleeder screws are on the "up" side of the caliper. Pads are believed to be properly installed in the calipers. Supplied metal "rings" (approx 2 inch in diameter) have been installed on the center hole of each disc (inside the ring of lugs) and are flat - e.g. not causing interference between the disc and the axle end plate.

As can been seen in the photo of the "conflicting' PS caliper/disc, the caliper mounting bolt is NOT fully tightened (about 1/8th inch of mounting bolt threads still showing "above" the surface of the bracket, yet the caliper is resting on/touching the outer surface of the disc. If when the caliper mounting bolt is fully tightened, the outer portion of the caliper "pulls/presses" on the disc surface so hard that the disc will no longer turn.

One observation of differences between the two calipers: DS caliper has "black" metal tabs/washers on the rubber "bellows" of the bolt that attaches the two parts of the caliper together. PS caliper has a "gold" metal tabs/washers on the "bellows".

Thoughts? Observations? How to fix?

Many many thanks

Lynn

Hi,
It looks from the photo's that the disk is not on properly. I would try swapping the disks from one side to the other and see if the caliper problem moves with the disks if not the issue will be with the upright/stub axle. If the problem follows the disk check that bearings are installed correctly. I am no expert but do know the frustration as had something similiar happen to me while rebuilding on an old Falcon with upgraded brakes recently. Hope this helped.

From looking closely at both disc's, I believe they are both properly mounted/seated, but will give the side-to-side swap a try when i get out to the shop this AM and will report back.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I have not dealt with the 13" brakes from the Anniversary version however the GT and Cobra componets frequently require shimming between the caliper and mount to get it centered on the rotor.

Lynn,

We have shims for that. You need to place them between the caliper and the bracket on the rear end. Please call FFR so we can send them to you.

Kind regards,

There were some flat washers in the bag with the caliper attaching bolts that I thought might ought to go between the caliper and the bracket, but that seemed to be more of a "hack" than a proper solution - unlike some proper shims. Let me get out to the shop and I'll give a call from there so's I can give you the correct information re: thickness and/or number of shims.

I really appreciate both the responsiveness of Forum members to help us "beginners" with our build, and that FFR is also standing by to help as needed. Reinforces that the decision to build an FFR project was the right choice!

Thanks

Lynn

When I had the same problem I went to Home Depot and found in their nuts and bolts section proper steel shim washers. They were about 1/32" thick and I picked up a dozen. They allowed me to fine tune the caliper position on the rear end perfectly.
