View Full Version : Hood Hinges, paint, powder coat?

Who has powder coated or painted their MKIV hood hinges? Does the paint or powder coat start wearing off or get scuffed up badly anywhere on the mechanism and look bad?
Realizing every build is different from all decked out to bare bones.... Do unfinished hood hinges look good on a decently completed car?
Thanks

You'll definitely want to finish them with something, otherwise they'll rust & look awful. I used Rustoleum Hammer Tone Silver on my hinges. They're holding up reasonably well.
You'll also want to paint the section of the upper steering shaft between the steering wheel boss and the driver side of the pillow block. It'll rust up on you as well. If you get paint on the portion where the shaft plugs into the boss, or the portion that goes into the pillow block, you won't have enough clearance & the shaft will either be impossible to insert or will get stuck.

If it’s a kit from the last couple of years they are stainless so rust isn’t a factor. If you’re ambitious and like shiny things you could smooth and polish them (they’re just a rough, sharp edged mill finish as delivered) but personally they aren’t something that I want to draw attention to. Most just go with black either via powder coat or rattle can.

Read the first response from Phileas and started wondering why stainless would rust. Lol
Then read Kleiners post and felt better realizing the hinges haven’t always been made from 3xx stainless.
Thank you both for the responses. I will plan to powder them black. I do like the look of stainless too. I might deburr and clean them up and see how they look before I do that though.

I vote for powder coat. Mine match the chassis. Just have to clean out the holes when you go to re-insert the bushings.

Another vote for power coat. The parts don't rub on each other so it holds up very well.

Man, F5 has really upped the quality of parts provided in the past 5 years. I *almost* wish I'd waited. ;)

Whichever way you decide to go make sure you have debrided and clearanced for shoulder bolts, carriage bolts and bushings.....especially on the SS hinges . I have seen the SS hinges show some surface rust. There are lots of grades of stainless...da Bat

I just powder coated all of my hinges satin black. No real need to draw attention to hinges plus the struts are black.

Another PC here to match the chassis (gloss black in my case).

I ended up leaving mine raw stainless, looking back I wish I would have polished them but too late now. Living in CA I do not anticipate rust problems but time will tell on the quality of stainless FFR used.

It's not a question of quality so much as what SS alloy is used. There are different varieties. Some have content that can show light rust, magnetism, etc.
To the OP's question, I've always power coated them the same color as the chassis. No problem with wear showing or whatever. Mainly rides on the provided bronze bushings.

I powder coated mine. Be advised the edges have a coating on them that needs to sanded off if you do it yourself. I did the trunk in flat black and will do the same to the hood.
