View Full Version : Vin Plate Mounting?
Does the VIN plate get mounted before the registration process? If so, is there enough room to mount it with the body on?
I'm CT if that matters.

I'm in OH and didn't have my mounted prior to titling. The title clerk did freak out when she heard that I hadn't mounted my plate however.
I think the regulations are going to be different state to state in terms of plate on prior to titling/registration and also where they want the plate mounted. In OH, they didn't seem to care that much about location.
In Virginia, you mount the plate when the build is complete, you've submitted your registration paperwork to the DMV, and you're ready to have the DMV inspector come inspect and install the VIN plate. In my case, he just verified that I installed it.
I riveted the VIN plate next to the etched FF5 number on the 2 inch frame tube below the steering wheel. No problem with the body on.

I’m in Illinois and the state issues a separate tag with the VN #. On it. Illinois also stamps the rivets used to install their tag without the stamp on the rivets you basically have nothing in Illinois. I have yet to install the ffr supplied tag . Rob
Similar to other's experience ... Colorado issues a VIN tag that must be installed at a State Patrol facility by a State Patrol Officer.
Order of events in Colorado:
1. Get a VIN inspection [number check for stolen parts (engine and chassis) and safety equipment check]
2. Apply for a state-issued VIN
3. Have VIN tag installed
4. Title and register the car
As for location of the VIN tag, Colorado requires it be mounted on a non-removable part of the car. Mine got installed on the square (a-pillar) tube that the door hinges attach to on the driver's side of the car. The Colorado VIN tag is about 1/3 the size of the plate that FFR sends you. The plate that FFR sent is sitting on my desk. Some day, I may get the VIN engraved on it and install it in the engine bay.

In Maryland I went to the DMV a week before I took the car to make sure I had all my ducks lined up. The trooper was very familiar with FFR cars and a really nice guy. He told me to mount the VIN plate in a conspicuious place. I put mine on top of the passenger footbox. They also sick a VIN sticker inside the car and VIN stickers at various points on the frame. It was a breeze in Md.

It definitely matters what state you are in. It also may matter the date. Regs involving FFR type cars tend to change. And sometimes the laws change but the regs don't keep up. Best thing to do is research the details in your state.

The only thing that matters is what YOUR state's rules are. What the other 49 do has no bearing whatsoever.

My car is originally from CT and has decal VIN plate affixed to the front X frame with a VIN assigned by the state.

No the Inspector will affix the VIN decal as tonywy has mentioned. then you can at any point mount the FFR supplied vinplate to the car if you want
After I got the VIN sticker, I then had my plate engraved with the VIN number
BTW when are you going to the DMV?

Ron at Metal Morphous is finishing up the painting, so probably about 3-4 weeks away from DMV. You’ve already given me some pointers on dealing with the DMV, but feel free to offer anything else.

The CT DMV inspector will affix the CT VIN sticker, after that is done you can mount the one from FFR anywhere you like. Good luck at the Wethersfield inspection station.
