View Full Version : Mk 4 - Fuel tank pick up is too long? Incorrect part???

Trying to install the fuel tank pick up in the tank of my complete kit.
But it appears to be too long.
It's been properly (I think) gently twisted and turned to ensure it's in the sump area of the tank and the "tangs" are properly lined up with their respective "notches" in the hole where it's to be installed.
The box the fuel pick up came out of adds to the puzzle. Printed FF5 label (with the bar code) has "14468" printed on the end of the box, which is the correct part number based on my inventory sheets.
But "14494 inside" is written in blue "sharpie" on the end of the box just below the label.

Do I have the wrong fuel pick up .... e.g. #14494 instead of #14468 .... or do i need to (gently) bend the pickup tube to fit properly .... and hope it doesn't crack?

Thanks

Lynn

Hi Lynn,

If you run into this problem, it's because the filter at the end of the pickup wasn't pushed on far enough, and you can make the adjustment in just a couple min. In any case, I wouldn't bend the tube.

I believe they use some type of adhesive between the plastic filter and the steel tube, so it takes a pretty good twist to break it free. Once you get it to rotate, you can continue to rotate it and push it further over the tube (it's still a tight fit, even once you get it moving). Be careful not to move it too far up, because you'll bottom the steel tube out at the base of the filter, and nothing will be able to flow. With a light behind the filter, you should be able to see inside and push the filter over the tube until the tube just begins to appear out of the plastic within the filter.

Thanks Jason for getting back to me. Feed back from one of the FFR tech guys is really appreciated.

I sorta thought that might be the solution, but when I tried to twist the plastic filter to loosen it so it could be moved/raised, I didn't put a lot of muscle to it for fear of breaking something.

In the interim - after some discussion & research - I've pretty much decided to go with an in-tank pump assembly and will be trying to selling the supplied pick up when i get a bit further down the road with my build.

Thanks again

I ran into the same problem. It does look like I can get enough length if I slide the filter up but as Lynn said I'm fearful of breaking it. If I do manage to move it, do I need to bond it or leave it alone. Thanks.

Ok I found the solution. I was able to loosen the filter but still unable to move it much up the tube. With a back light, I could still see space available and what looked like two 3/8 inch tabs. Further inspection made it obvious that the tabs are part off the filter designed to keep the tube from bottoming out on the end of the filter. So I was able to slide the filter off and cut the tube about 3/8 to1/2 inch, smoothed it and replaced the filter. It still fit tight and I was able to place the pickup in the tank and had no problem seating and securing it. I verified the placement and all is good.

Excellent - yes it will definitely seem like it's going to break just before it frees up. Also, you won't need to bond it back in place.
