Looking for a non-candy alternative to HOK Brandywine, has anyone seen something close?

So years ago I always thought Candy Apple Red was the perfect/only choice for a hot rod. However, there are so many vibrant, popping red OEM vehicles these days (Ford, Mazda,...) it is no longer distinctive. The last thing I want after spending all this time and money is something you see every day. I'm continually drawn to pics that show the hot rod, cobra, etc painted in HOK Brandywine, just love it although I haven't seen one in person. I'm also trying to be realistic and stay away from Candy (tri coat) paints as they are so difficult to touch up. My '33 is going to be a driver and at some point will need touch up.

So that bring us to the question above: what's the closest you've seen to HOK Brandywine without going candy?

Thanks for your help and suggestions

Steve

I have seen HOK Candy Brandywine on multiple Hot Rods and other cars up close and in person at the Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona. Every time I see it my reaction is "that is f***ing gorgeous!" and swear that is what I want on my '33. However, a) I share your concerns about a candy color on a driver (as mine is intended to be), and b) several professional painters I spoke to refused to use HOK Candy paints (apparently color consistency problems). As a result, I've been looking around for a couple of years now for an alternative - preferably one used on an OEM vehicle. The closest I've found to date are 2 colors in PPG's "Vibrance" line: http://us.vibrancecollection.com/getattachment/15dcb42e-9a18-43ed-987b-25e8c9f53937/Wineberry-over-Charcoal-Silver or http://us.vibrancecollection.com/getattachment/fa071c4c-3750-40c5-84f4-898324e3bb26/Vine-Red-over-Red-Pearl If you have access to a PPG store, you can sort through their boxes of color chips and finalize your decision based on something better than an on-line catalog image.

Thanks Keith, I've seen the Vibrance collection online - as you say, so difficult to tell anything on a computer screen you gotta see this stuff in real life.

Still a tri-coat though

Much appreciated

You might like HOK's Wild Cherry. You need to see it in the sunlight to appreciate it.

My non-candy brandywine stripe color is Porsche Carmona Red Metallic which was supplied on 2004 Cayenne's and Boxters.

The color changes a bit depending on the sun and angle. It fades to black when your viewing level changes.

I parked right next to a 2004 maroon Cayenne one time but for some strange reason my maroon was deeper and more vibrant. It may have been the clearcoat.

Thanks guys - Lickity, Wild Cherry is a candy - so called Kandy Basecoat (KBC) which HOK says is so much easier to spray and repair than the previous Candy, However I'm told they are not.
Nice Guy, very nice!! that is very hopeful!

Not HOK, but PPG. It's Lexus' Brandywine. Could this be the shade you're looking for? It is base and clear, not a tri-color. Jeff K applied it.

Go to a PPG store, they have hundreds, maybe thousands of samples. That was the only way I could find the exact color I wanted.

I'll give it a try but you'd be amazed how different Canada is than the US in this regard, it's like a third world country - for aftermarket parts we have about 2 or 3 local stores and they virtually carry no stock whatsoever, everything is special order out of the US. The local HOK distributor only has old Shimrin samples, nothing really from the Shimrin 2 line, they have to mix a sample for you to spray out. I see there's one or 2 PPG distributors listed, I'll give them a call...

x2 on the PPG store, if you can find one. The one in my town is in a single, small unit in an "industrial strip mall". However, they had experienced people and boxes and boxes of paint chips. They also would custom mix small quantities for you to spray out to confirm your color selection, for a nominal cost. They seem like a useful resource.

I found a local PPG distributor that had the Vibrance sample book.
Some yummy stuff in there!!
I think I liked Cherry Bomb the best followed by Wineberry over gold, or the Hellfire, or..

Here’s a Vibrance Hellfire that I did a couple of years ago.

It is a tri-coat; this is what’s underneath.

Sit down when you ask the price ;)
