New take-out IRS carriers are somewhat harder to come by up here in Canada so my question is "what is the maximum mileage you would accept on a wrecking yard donor before turning your nose up at it"?

Take a look at it and make sure the case is not cracked.
Then open it and look at the all the internals and as long as they are not cracked, chipped, broken, or worn down in any way you should be fine.
Maybe just little more wary of the side impact to the rear wheels for sure though.
You may even may be changing the ratio depending on what is in it so even some of the above won't matter either
These 8.8's nowadays are pretty stout.

A visual inspection is a given. My local wrecker gives 6 months warranty on parts so lots of time to pull the rear cover and inspect the gears. I would do that anyways to flush the old oil out. At what mileage would you start to see any appreciable wear? I'm thinking barring any crash caused damage a diff with say <20K on it is going to look almost new.

Chickened out on buying from the wreckers.

Found this almost brand new (<100 km) piece taken out of a brand new 2020 Mustang. The owner wanted to upgrade to the 3.73 torsen immediately.

Scrabbling around looking for something to do while I wait for engine parts to come.

The cast iron part of the center section is already looks to be painted, should I also give it a coat of POR15?

I think it looks good the way it is. Looks brand new!

Is it an open dif? What gears does it have?

What engine are you running? Trans?

I run a Torsen in my older 8.8 IRS dif with 3.55's for my 302 and TKO 600/.80 final drive. Folks with Coyote's seem to like the 3.73's and a .60 final drive.

The Torsen is more than just a nice-to-have, IMO.

David,

For all intents and purposes it is brand new. It was taken out of a 2020 Mustang. The guy wanted a Performance Pack Mustang with the 3.73 Torsen diff and the only way he could get what he wanted was to swap the new diff in. This one so I'm told only has about 100 km on it.

It's a 3.55 ratio. Its going to go on the back of a 302/AOD powertrain. I've been told it's a very workable combo by a few guys running the same set up in their 33HR's.
