View Full Version : Headlight problems W/Russ Thompson Turn Signal

I am currently attempting to run down a problem where my high beams continually stay on regardless of pushing the button on the turn signal stalk (Russ Thompson). I have changed the Bosch relay but not the VW. I can remove the high beam wire from the relay and get low beams but then no dash lights or rear running lights. If I attach the high beam wire I now get a continues buzz or chatter which I thought was a indication of a bad relay? I started to run Anzo LED head lights and rear led bulbs for better visibility and wanted to see if anyone has had same problems running leds, I did not build the car and really in the shakedown mode as it has 550 miles on it at the time. I have attempted to research this on both FF sites but to no avail and I am coming to the wire to get it ready and make the Texas cobra meet here in a few weeks.
Thanks again and sorry if this is redundant topic.

The bosch relay is for FTP the VW is latching relay for Low/High beams. I had a similar issue when acting like a dumb@$$ quickly tapping the momentary switch when testing the system. I think the latching mechanism gets stuck causing the issue. I picked up a new one and worked fine and made sure I didn't start tapping the switch like an old Nintendo button.

Not sure how the turn lights can be effected by this if wired correctly. They are not on the circuit. I have LED headlamps and they work fine with the setup.

don't spend the money on another (soon to fail at the worst time) VW relay. Get one of the solid state set ups (ididit available at summit and others - uses (almost) the same wires as your relay)

Couldn't agree more. I'm using an Ididit 3100006040 High Beam/Low Beam Switching Relay for my current build. I've bench run it and works fine. Easy to wire up. Ditch all that other stuff. I believe either Ron Francis or Painless has something similar. But the Ididit one is what I'm familiar with. Previous builds I used an American Autowire module. Sort of similar. But not available any more.

FWIW, the issue you're having, assuming it's something with the relays, shouldn't affect the running lights, turn signals, hazards, etc. Those are completely separate circuits. If they're acting up, the problem is deeper than just the relays.

This is your solution.* $24 latching relay. I installed it on my Coupe. I sent all this info to Russ a little while back and again a couple days ago when he asked for it again. Check out my build thread you’ll see the section on it. There is no relay block for it so you have to use spade connectors. I thought about designing a block/harness to 3D print but then figured I was over complicating it.

Ad reads “... an essential component to helping your vehicle run flawlessly.” How can you argue with flawless?

You can use this for high/low switching, for toggling multiple relays on separate circuits. Possibilities stop with your imagination.

*unless you have a wiring issue as people have stated above

Thanks for the reply gentlemen, I did make a mistake by not saying the Bosch relay is the one with the chatter and it has been replaced and still chatters so not wanting to bury guess will attempt to drop dash and get good look at the wiring.

Sounds like your relay "chatter" might be caused by the relay trying to ground itself thru another device - maybe your TS circuits.
Eg; Your headlights are trying to find ground thru a turn signal bulb.

As others have noted, your Brake/TS circuits are completely separated from your head light circuit.
Park/tail lights are part of your headlight circuit . . .

So I received my new relays along with the new Ididit relay to retro fit in future. The flash to pass button is being used to go to low beam to high beam, in low beam they work but no running lights and no instrument gauge lights, go to high beams and everything works buts Bosch relay chatters so guess its a wiring issue my luck so now going to have to drop dash to get to wiring and see what is going on.
